Midnight blue- 1999 Camaro Z28
Which cold air intake to get?
First off, the basics. My car is a 6-speed 1999 Z28. The mods are pretty basic. Just exhaust, 8.5mm MSD plug wires, and an Ultra Z hood (not sure in this influences this, but it does have a scoop). I was looking on eBay and saw two different types of cold air intake. I don't care about the price difference (they're not that far apart), I just want to know which one is best for my car, or if neither are necessary at all. Here they are:
K&N COLD AIR INTAKE 98-02 PONTIAC FIREBIRD 5.7L V8
1998-1999 LS1 CAMARO Z28 SS SLP HIGH PERFORMANCE FLOWPAC COLD AIR INTAKE SYSTEM

Have you considered the Volant or K&N's FIPK? I only mention them since you already have the Ultra Z hood. You could also consider getting an SS or a WS6 lower air box as long as your hood is functional.

Black/Black/Black- 2000 Camaro SS Vert #5301
All I have is an SLP lid and the "free ram air" mod since the hood scoops don't have that much effect. Has worked great for the last 12 yrs.

Is this the Volent one you mean?
Also, would it work with my hood scoop (the Ultra Z hood, see my avatar) without any additional mods? It's scoop is much lower than an SS' hood.

Yes that's the volant many run and like, some have the double filter setup too.
On the K&N stuff,, their pieces are usually pretty good, just steer clear of oiled type filters.
Your MAF will thank you for it..
The gains from their filters (k&n) have been dyno proven to be near worthless and nowhere near their HP gain claims.
I can't comment of whether or not a volent CIA will work with your Ultra Z hood as I have seen very few here or elsewhere.

If you can see the air gap in the front of your lid through your Ultra Z hood then I'de recommend going after a lower airbox assembly from an SS or a WS6. The cheapest alternative would be either the free ram air mod or cutting and raising your stock lower air box. I just finished cutting/raising mine, was a PITA but wound up being a decent modification.
