A cheap fix to the banging Y-pipes.

By now I'm sure that every one that's had an ORY installed knows how bad they can bang against the bottom of the car. I have a pretty simple fix to the problem if you don't mind a little welding. As you can see from the pic I welded a bolt about 1.5 to 2 inches long from behind the bend on the drivers side of the y-pipe to the brace that connects to the floor board right above it. It's set far enough back that it still allows the y- pipe to flex enough when the engine torques up. Just make sure your really careful not to get the floor board too hot to keep from catching your carpet on fire. I'd weld for about 5 to 10 seconds then spray the brace with water. make sure to build up enough of a weld to hold it strong. The first time it was just tacked it in place and it broke pretty quick so then we welded it in place and welded plenty extra up around it. It's held pretty strong since installed. I've bottomed the car on the y-pipe a few times on speed bumps and it's held strong.

PM me if you have any other questions on it.

P.S. sorry for the pic quality I'll get the car up on jack stands and take a better pic later.

Interesting fix to a common issue.

Problem is I can't see the weld holding up unless you have poly or solid motor mounts, every time the motor torques over it will put a ton of stress on that weld.

not to mention the stress it puts on the head where the header mounts. i'm on the crazy side and i would always be worried that my head would crack or something

I have poly mounts but I even checked it. the weld is far enough back that it lets the piping still flex and

its not like the y pipe was bent alot, just slightly.
alot of us locals have done that and we have had zero problems.

i haeted mine up and flattened it some and it still bangs alot...

when you say bend you mean like bend it down away from the floor board toward the ground?

and where did you bend yours?? i was thinking maybe 6-8 inches in front of bent on drivers side... is that correct?

Welding it is a bad idea. Eventually it will cause stress cracks on the headers, y-pipe, and the bolt will either break off of the y-pipe or the frame

It could even cause the headers gaskets to start leaking

I've got an even cheaper red neck fix than that. I took some high temp silicone vacuum hose that I left over from my mazdaspeed. I took some wire and ran it through the hose about 1.5 feet long or so and wrapped it three times around the banging section on the floor. It was still a pretty tight fit, but it works great.

    bend it downward.
i heated it up about 7 inches from where it Ys off on both pipes, its worked like a charm.

yeah either bend it or do the heater hose mod. both are tried and true methods.
