Speaking of the devil. My fucking check engine light is on.

I took it in to get and OBD and it's the god damn cat. It was replaced once at about 20k miles. Does anyone know if it is the cats that are warrantied; as in, is the new one still covered?

I'm living in Indiana where there are no emission standards, could I just chop off the cats and replace it with pipe?

I'm eventually getting TS true duals but right now chopping them off kind of just seems like a better plan right now because of money. Advice welcome.

Absolutly....chop that bitch out and use it as a target! If you dont have emissions, it should be illegal to have cats! That was the first mod I did, cut those fuckers right out!

I believe it is 1 year/12K miles. So, probably out of luck.

If you don't notice any performance/gas MPG issues, it could be only that the cat is not cleaning as well as the PCM wants it to. You could live with the light until you get your duals then have someone tune out your light if you lose the convertors then.

Is throwing a code the ONLY way to get GM to acknowledge replacement. Right now I only have a rotten egg smell that lingers after driving. Is that enough to get them replaced?

...car is a 2000 SS with 49k....I don't know if cats have ever been replaced (which is why I want them replaced).

^^^Yes, unless they are clogged so bad that the engine won't run right. Sometimes they won't set the code, all you notice is no power or the car won't go over 40 MPH or so.

Hmm, so might there be any way that I might.....accidentally make my cats go bad? I'd hate for them to go right after that 10 year period is up...

Like I mentioned here, neither of mine were giving a code and both were replaced.

^^^ Maybe I'll give the dealer a call. Right now I get the rotten egg smell. And it seems when starting off in first gear accelerating mildly, it starts to sound like a diesel engine when it gets up around 2-3k rpm. I'm not sure if it's a strong knock, but it just doesn't sound right for some reason.

What can I tell the dealer?

Just tell them you think your CATS might be bad and they will check it out. The warranty runs 10/120k.

^^^However if they check out fine, there will probably be a check out charge.

If the cats are still within the 10/120 warranty, there should definitely be no charge, regardless of whether they are bad or not.

If you bring your car to the dealer to have a warranty issue checked out, they can't charge you for it.

I disagree. They can charge if the customer says "I have a driveability issue, I think it is the catalytic convertors. Will you check to see if they are operating ok?" If there is no problem with the convertor(s), there should be a check out charge for that. Now if someone says "will you check my tie rods" or "check my tires" I agree a simple check like that should be no charge.

Checking a catalytic convertor can involve disconecting it from the exhaust manifold and then driving the car. Or removing an O2 sensor, installing an exhaust back pressure gauge, to check for restriction.
