Best lid/airbox

I want to hear from everyone what they think,I want to know whats better the lid or airbox for my trans am or camaro, What's the best out there? I have a lid on both just looking online and thought to see what everyone thinks, Maybe there really isnt much of a difference in any of them so it really doesnt matter.

The best lid is no longer available and it's the Blackwing. If you can find one they usually run about $350+.

Blackwing is the best mainly because it fits and seals the way it should, just like the factory lid. If you decide to go after one make very sure that the rubber boot that connects the lid to the MAF is in good condition. They are unique to this lid and are not available anywhere.

for stock maf then the SLP airlid. if running a 102 FAST intake and TB with a larger maf then the Fast Toys 104mm airlid

They do have a 98mm that will work with the stock MAF. It is practically the same size and look of a SLP airlid. In fact all look like SLP except for the Volant Air (not worth getting) It looks cool but no gains over the SLP/Fast Toys lids.

Eh...seen some dyno sheets that show gains over other lids with a volant intake. With that said, you lose the radiator support because of how it's made which I wouldn't like at all.

The Volant is crappy quality. And the lid is the radiator support for that one in the way it is molded. I would either go SLP if you don't have a FAST or FTP 104 if you do or plan on getting an intake with a larger than stock inlet. If you get the 104 and hook it up to the stock intake track the gains will be minimal over the slp because the rest of the intake track is restricted and not the same size as the lid outlet.

I'd stick with the same size lid that matches the rest of your intake track to avoid creating unnecessary turbulance. So if you're running a stockish sized MAF and/or throttle body, I'd recommend just staying with a stock size lid like the SLP or something similar.

I think for a while SLP had a run of bad fitting lids from all the reports I've seen. However I've never had that issue with 3 of them I've run in the past, so that problem may have come and gone. The blackwing is a nice piece because it fits nicely, but doesn't offer any more power over anything else on the market so I wouldn't be too quick to pay big dollars for one.

The Volant, if it's the one I'm thinking of that looks like a pair of boobs, is just that. Never cared for that ugly looking thing just flopped over the core support, they just never looked like they took the time to make that setup at least look like it belongs there. Just looks like an after thought to me.

I'd go with stock sized stuff until you find it's time to step up to some large intake and throttle body setup, and then start looking at the Fast Toys large inlet air boxes at that point.

Whisper lid which I don't think is made anymore either.

Or fab up a ram air style with a velocity stack on it for track and come filter for street, that's what I plan on doing.

I bought the SLP lid a few years ago. Had to heat it up with a hair dryer to help it fit onto the MAF. Once I heated it up, it slid right on, no problem.

Here is an interesting and fairly cheap alternative. A full stainless steel lid with nitrous bungs already installed. According to the ad, the stainless is less likely to blow up if you have a backfire...good to know. For $65 bucks seems like a great deal. They also have some interesting exhaust bits from this vendor but don't seem to show up in my regular Firebird search. That looks nice but that is probably all it does effectively. I would imagine it gets really hot though.

What it won't do is catch fire in the event of a backfire and then procede to burn the rest of the car to the ground. I've seen that deal before, not pretty.

Unfortunately everything below that lid is still plastic I'd personally like to see all that crap removed and replaced with some form of metal.

Yeah that whole air intake deal on all the 4th gens has always bugged me plastic or not. It all sits right on top of a 200 degree radiator, pffff

Would be more productive to run the inlet out of the engine compartment as quick as possible without going anywhere near the radiator. Unfortunately the intake manifold design points directly front and center, with the radiator leaning back towards it and taking up more room. It's more like a "HOT" air intake

Agree, I have no idea how they are making money on this. Would almost want to buy one just to stick it on the garage wall.
