Any thoughts on Cleaning 01 engine compartment?
Picked up a higher mileage 01 z28. Was driven year round and the engine compartment is almost as white as the car. Don't even know where to begin !! Should I just take this to a proffesional detailing place or should I start unplugging and covering electronics and blast away? I don't think anyone will think blasting high pressure is a good idea but I'm tempted to do it the compartment is so very very dirty.
help !

Simple Green, spray it.....everywhere....let it soak a few minutes, then spray it off. You'll be surprised.

Should I be worried about all the sensors etc? How about the coils? Better safe than sorry I guess maybe I should just remove them first. thanks !

All the connectors are weather pack so you should be fine. If your that worried leave the engine running just be carefull of spraying near the air intake slot. And even using the simple green all you would need is low pressure to wash that stuff off.
I have 131K miles I drive mine all year round and been through 10 Michigan winters and I use the quarter car wash engine cleaner every spring with no issues.Last edited by 9T8W66; 05-04-2009 at 07:42 AM.

It probably goes without saying... but do not hose down a hot engine with cold water. Make sure the engine is cool when you start if you choose this method. Usually, I just avoid directing the stream of water on the electronics as much as possible. As soon as I am finished I start it up and let the engine build up some heat to evaporate any standing water.

Spray simple green everywhere on a warm engine. Saturate everything. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Scrub the heavily soiled areas. Rinse with a spray, not a stream of water. Avoid excessive water around the coils and try to avoid spraying too much water under the intake manifold.

I just did this. Made my belt all squeeky. Next time I'll just scrub it by hand.
