Question About how much HP will I gain with this combo of simple mods? 1999 30th T/A...

    Hi there...

I have a garage kept immaculate 30th T/A that I'm doing simple mods to. It's absolutely 100% stock right now...I'd like to know realistically how much HP/RWHP I can expect to gain by doing the following simple reversible mods:

    1) Volant cool air intake, sealed to hood with Lowe's weatherstripping
    2) All hood baffles removed
    3) Ported & polished MAF
    4) Ported & polished TB
    5) LS6 intake
    6) TB Bypass
    7) Muffler delete (stock exhaust/cats, pipe wide open to rear of car)
    8) Dyno-tuned after at Thunder Racing in Baton Rouge (I'm close by)

    Thanks!
    Jeff

people who mess with the MAF generally have problems, leave it stock, it can handle way above 400 rwhp.
ported and polished t/b about 5 rwhp
    volant 10-12 rwhp
    ls6 intake about 10 rwhp
    no muffler 7-10 rwhp

you have zero reason or need to do a dyno tune, save your money for something else.
you really wont get anything along the lines of h.p with a stock engine.

I gained about 10-12 hp from a tune when my car was bolt on. Mac headers tho.

    It's an M6 car...

Why would I NOT want a ported/polished MAF housing? I've already got one in a package deal for the ported/polished TB...how could having a ported/polished MAF housing hurt anything?

And also, why WOULDN'T I want a tune to maximize the new breathing of the engine if they are capable of 30+ horsepower? Seems like I would want the engine to be tuned for the new mods...

    Thanks,
    Jeff

If you plan on going Longtube headers down the road I would wait on the tune.

do a search about MAFs. you will see they cause nothing but problems.
you want to waste youre money on a tune, go ahead.
tuning is not needed at all for what you are doing.

Factory tune is very conservative as they programed all the same for consistency. There is power to be made with tuning a factory stock engine but not worth the money at your stage suggested. I have a predator tune uploaded and am getting ready for a cam install. At that time I will pay for a tune and put it on the dyno as I plan for nothing more and feel a tune is the last step. So if a dyno tune is worthless at my stage right now, what benefit did the Predator tune give you if the factory tune is so good?

    Thanks,
    Jeff

That's foolish to say that a tune with those mods is a waste. GM wrote the programming to level out on emmisions, mileage, and power. There's alot to be had from tuning even at stock form. Unless your planning to mod even more soon after those installs I'd say go ahead and get the tune. If your going to mod the crap out of the car then you should probally wait until most of its done because you will most likely have to pay to retune in the future for additional mods.

I don't plan on doing much modification at all...this will probably be my limit. I'm just doing simple mods to this particular car. Unless I could get a professional install for a great price for long tubes, then this will most probably be it.

I was under the impression that "thecorrectformula" stated...that any dyno tune even without mods will bring out SOME horsepower specific to your car since the factory tune is "one size fits all." I was thinking that with the much better breathing/exhaust from the mods listed above, a tune would really let the engine take advantage of these simple mods...as well as resetting my fan settings and deleting my egr and skip shift.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

    I would wait

Sounds like you got the correct message and scoop. Based on your last comment I would wait until the LT install so you can turn-off any engine/emissions lights that might result. Good luck

Basically what everyones saying is yeah, a tune will always be a good idea, mods or no mods. But is it really worth it to you to spend the money on a tune now, when you could wait till you have everything you want in mods, and then tune it? I personally think it would be a waste of money to tune it, buy more stuff, and tune it again, but if money isnt really a burden for you, go for it.

it is to my understanding that re-tuning a bone stock ls1 is worth ~10 hp.

considering the price of a tune and the extent of your mods, i personally wouldnt spend the money on a tune at this stage.

analogy: its like you wanting a motorcycle when youve just learned to ride a bicycle.

if youre worried about not feeling a difference with the mods youve chosen, dont worry is the advice i can give you. you will feel it. i have all that you are doing except the ls6 intake.

my car runs very well for being stock.

maf is a very exact thing and tampering with it can cause you to run rich or lean and to have idle trouble, all for probably 1 hp. who wants that kind of trouble. increasing the volume of the throttle body is far more productive than "porting" a maf sensor.

stock is good for ~500 hp.

I hear a lot of bad things about porting the MAF. I wouldn't do it

I have personally seen 15 RWHP from an LS6 IM. I have also seen 5 RWHP on a P&P TB. Both were done 1 at a time on a 99 Z28 M6 for a total of 20 RWHP . God I love how LS1's Respond to bolt ons.

I never had the car dyno tuned. It was a street tune and it had almost everything done to it before it was tuned.
