    Wrong oil level? 2003 LS1

    Hi All,

I cant believe I didnt catch this earlier. My 1998 Camaro LS1 had it's engine replaced back in 2003 w/ a long block that has heads that have 2003 LS1 #'s. (I assume this means entire engine is 2003 LS1).

I've been filling the engine w/ 1998 LS1 oil capacity (5.5qts) and have literally just realized that the 2003 LS1 engine takes 6.5qts...

Any advice on what I should check for in terms of damage?
Is it possible I'm wrong and the '03 LS1 should be 5.5qts? (Dont want to overfill)...

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated... thank you.

Where are you getting 6.5 qts? I'm assuming your looking up an 03 corvette ls1 oil capacity? If so... The oil pan is completely different on the corvette ls1 ( which makes up the quart difference in spec). I'm sure whoever replaced the engine used your factory oil pan as the vette pan will not fit a f-body ... so the factory oil spec of 5.5 qts is correct. No damage.

If all else fails, use the dipstick as reference

Sweet! Ok this does make me feel better...

That said, since I'm doing a filter also, should I replace w/ 6ts?

My 2000 is at the bottom at the dip stick with 5.5 quarts so I put it 6 quarts and I have had zero issues with it.

I should be more precise, it goes to the bottom of the checker "full" area. My Jeep is the same freaking way but my GTO and Corvette if I femember were spot on.

I believe all naturally-aspirated LSx engines take 6 qts however there are members here who will use 5.5. I put 6 quarts in my car.

Now, I have been told if you go to the track you should take half a quart out. Ever hear that? Relieves case pressure I think.

Some of the guys on here probably go through 1/2 quart after a day at the track.

    I am sure, Jeff went through about 1/2 of a 1/2 of a 1/2 of a 1/2 of a 1/2 of a 1/2 of a 1/2 of a 1/2 of a 1/2 of a 1/2 of a 1/2........................(some 20 minutes later) of a 1/2 in his catch can. lol

I bet the big HP boys do though.

An extra 1/2 quart will not hurt anything. You have more then that clinging to the inside of the engine at any given time and even if you let an engine sit for years, drop the pan and pickup you will still have 1/2 quart inside the engine in nooks, and little holds. So go ahead, 1/2 quart all around for everyone, it's on me.

Never heard that, I go through a half quart every 1000 miles or so. Which reminds me that I should check my catch can and see what I caught

A chub perhaps? Pssst! A chub is one of those little fish that take your bait or that you catch when you dont want to. Then you step on them or beat them against a rock because they are worthless! Damn things!

Sorry, fish and I have had some battles. I have yet to win.
