Will this work
A couple of my buddies told me to get a LS1 and drop it into a 1990 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS. Does anyone know if I can pull this off without having to take it into a shop, and if so what would I need for the engine swap?

What would be the point-my understanding is the Mitsu weighs about the same as a Camaro. The F-body would handle better and stop faster. Aside from the novelty/looks thing maybe -I don't see any benefit. Now-drop that LS1 in a light weight sand rail........

The 90 mitsu isn't the same weight as a camaro that's the newer body style that has close to the same weight. I had a 90 turbo talon (same thing as the eclipse just with eagle badges) before they are lighter and the Eagle versions are a tad heavier than the mitsu versions. I had one and from a dig V8's would eat me alive but from rolls they couldn't. That little 190 hp had some guts. I'm kind of rusty is the GS the AWD one? If it's not it would be a good roll race car but that is about it. An LS1 FWD car thats lighter than an fbody would have HUGE torque steer and traction issues worse than a 4.10 geared car on water. If its an AWD the AWD would kick ass "IF" the whole setup could be retained. Otherwise unless you convert it to RWD (which would probably be quite fun and kick major cajones)then you go back to the FWD LS1's problems and the fact that it would handle like a turd.
Now on the actual installation unless you can fabricate stuff like motor mounts, trans mounts or create trans adapters, good with wiring, exhaust routing and got a good sawzall it can be done I'm sure, otherwise it would probably be easier to convert a camaro to AWD then try that swap. Rule of thumb if you have to ask if you can do it you usually can't. I've wrenched cars for a while and wouldn't attempt a FWD install like that. Now if it was an AWD body then I'd have some fun with it and make it RWD only because I'm sure the AWD can't be kept. Just like the guy who installed an LS1 into a WRX suby. He had to convert to RWD because there wasn't room to keep the AWD.Last edited by slims00ls1z28; 05-13-2007 at 09:19 PM.

I would agree with the statement "If you have to ask you can't do it". If you were capable of doing it you wouldn't have to ask.

well the GS is the FWD but I am kinda thinking about scrapping the project and getting a used car from a dealership to build up. I still think an LS1 would be a nice thing to drop in there so now I need to know what you guys think would be a good idea...a camaro definately but other than that I wanna know.

MIATA!!!!! They fit without near as much modification, and are rear wheel drive from the factory, handle damn good, are light as sin, and a used one would be real cheap. Other than that my dream swap is an LS1 Fiero, almost bought the fiero but the guy backed out so I spent the money on mods.

Wanted to point out that the history of hot rodding IS stuffing big motors in little cars. Don't think I'm being too negative here, you've got the right spirit. Just don't bite off more than you can chew. If somebody makes a kit for your swap then alot of the fabricated parts and thinking has been done for you. Unless you have alot of mechanical know-how and experience (and a good machinist on speed dial) alot of these ideas are going to be out of your league.

There is a whole forum dedicated to LSx conversions on "that other LS1 site"...
Some of my favorites are:
Gen2 and Gen3 RX7
3rdGen F-body
Dodge Conquest/Mitsu Starion (this is probably the one that I would do)
240SX
Vega

I've also looked into the Vega Idea.
