wierd whine in my car
i just bought my 99 ss and i started getting on it recently its got 123,000 on it. my question is at a high rpm you will here a weird whine. i have an idea what it could be first was i thought it was the belt because it does whine at a cold start but goes away when it warms up, normal old belt noise, i just haven't replaced it yet so i cant rule that out. my next thought was it was a retainer not really sure i haven't taken a stethoscope to it to find out. next was, i thought it was a wrist pin on a piston and connecting rod getting worn and just needs to be replaced. i just heard this noise tonight so i don't really know what it could be. i was wondering if anyone had the same problems or any ideas thanks?

check your power steering fluid level. It might be low causing the pump to whine.

My guess would be the belt or power steering pump. You have a Goodyear Gatorback belt on your car?

Im having the same problem. theres no noise at start but as i rev the engine the whining gets louder. when i turn theres also kind of a grinding noise, i guess they might be connected.

my idler pulley and my ac tesioner pulley both just started making noise replaced both but my power steering hashad a little bit of whining since ive had the car but its opposite of your problem it only does it when ive been driving around in town for awhile and good and hot
but the ac tensioner made the most noise and it didnt make the usual sound of when they go bad and it only did it when it was cool

I used to have a whine when I took corners/curves fast. I quit letting my wife ride with me and it quit. [rim shot]

i changed the belt it seemed to help but it still does at times. so im not to worried about it unless it starts to happen again alot of the time.

im thinking mine might be the rack. not sure what in it but i replaced the p/s pump a month ago and the noise went away and now its back to doing the same thing. my pockets seem to feel a lot lighter because of the car but i love her like a child.
