Why does my Y-Pipe always hit the body!! How can I fix this??
I am going to an exhaust shop tomorrow. I am using the stock y-pipe since the SLP hit my body all the time. I use SLP LM for the cat-back system, but this y-pipe is a nightmare. I am running 4.10 gears and NX wet shot as well…so my first to second shift is crazy...the y-pipe bounces up and down slapping off the body like an explosion.
I have tried the bushing method in the past, but is there any other suggestions to keep this damn y-pipe from hitting the body under WOT? It is driving me crazy!!!!
Thanks,
Rich

Give it more support? If you have good ground clearance, drop it down a bit?

Your motor mounts are worn out that's why it's hitting
Replace them with Polyurethane and you'll be set.

How hard is it to replace motor mounts? Is this something for a novice in the garage, or is it a bitch?

Just found the Mufflex Bump stop for the y-pipe. my exhaust guy is putting it on for free to see if they should carry it to avoid so many camaro/firebird return visits with slaparoma.
Thanks guys for all the help!

I would still check out the motor mounts as others mentioned. The bump stop might quiet the slapping down but the torque on the pipe will still be happening and may cause it to start bending or leaks at the exhaust connections to the Y pipe. Just more of a classic fix the problem don't just cover it up until it really breaks. Good luck with it man!!

So your running stock manifolds and y pipe and its hitten the floor? Which side is hitten the floor? Check your mount on the pass side. The bumpstop works but i had too actualy cut my y pipe and weld in a new section too clear the floor board. but i have lt's and ory. If your running stock components then like said above its probly your motor mounts. Not too difficult too replace. If you go with poly mounts you will feel a lil more vibration while cruising but they will hold up better than the stock replacements.

I don't think it's the mounts (would be my second guess though)....GM made the y-pipe flat on the driverside for a reason. When you swap the stocker out for a bigger diameter Y there's just not enough clearance and it's going to bang the floorboard. My random-tech Y doesn't bang but it hangs low....the Y I made before the RT banged even under light throttle.

I would first try to adjust it so it didn't bang. I had a very similar problem to this and was able to keep adjusting on it until I got it to stop banging. I found that the angle of the pipe coming over the axle is very important to getting the Y to line up to where it doesn't bang. Loosen the exhaust all the way back to the muffler and just play with those angles until you get it to stop. I also found it helped to lodge blocks of wood in between the exhaust and floorboard while tightening everything up then taking the wood out.

I am an idiot! I have every suspension upgrade except a poly trans mount. Even though it was not torn, I replaced it anyway and the problem is solved. It was my trans that was slapping the body, not my y-pipe. Live and learn. I had replaced every other suspension part but this, and it turns out it was my prob....go figure. The car feels like a solid beast now, and I recommend this to any f-body for $25 and 40 minutes of your time...it is well worth it!

I am having the same problem with a SLP Y pipe. Where is the best place to look for the Poly Mounts?

Mufflex Bump stop for the y-pipe on Thunder Racing should take care of any y-pipe probs.
