    what size alternater?

Did a search on this site about this and couldn't seem to come up with anything, but anyways I gotta replace my alt. On a 98 ss, and was wondering if a 160 amp oe replacement would be ok? I have a optima batt., no sound system or anything, but a slp Crank pulley that keeps eveverything a little dim at idle. I found brand new alts. On e bay from like $100 - $140.what do you guys think? Thanks!

The problem isn't that you need a a higher Amperage alternator, it that your idle speed is now to low(25% lower) because your SLP 25% UD crank pulley has now slowed it down to low to keep up with the electrical demands. The best solution is to raise the idle speed up 15-25%, or you can install a alternator overdrive pulley. The only down side to the OD alt pulley is that if you spend much time above 5.5k rpm your alternator will have a shorter than normal life. Id suggest just getting a stock replacement alternator and having the idle bumped up.

A higher amp. Alt wouldn't hurt the electrical system in anyway. Right?

No it won't, but a higher output alternator would benefit from a upgrade to the power/ground cables.

For $100-$140 it's more than likely a re-manufactured alternator. Since I have yet to hear of a quality re-manufactured electric motor, I'd make sure you get a good warranty on it.

Yes I also just replaced my DD 98 z28s alternator brand new $145 with lifetime warranty. On my DD I am running the Racetronix Fuel Pump Harness, and upgraded power ground cable, which takes a bit more power out of the alternator, but nothing to worry about. I one day would like to upgrade to the truck alternator mod as sjsingle stated, would benefit from the heavier load on the electrical system.

If you decide to get the 160 amp oe replacement, let us know if there are any fitment issues and how it turned out.
