What goes out on alternators?
My alternator is starting to give out imo.I have 13.8 volts at idle, but drops below that on my instrument cluster when I turn the ac on.Its not the battery. So what
starts going out, rectifier, regulator or ?.Im thinking of rebuliding one.

I always assumed it was the brushes kinda like electrical motors, but not really sure.

Voltage regulator which ,I believe, has been built into altenators for many years now. After car runs for 5-7 minutes, you should read 13-16 volts at battery terminals. If you turn on stuff and it falls below that, my guess is alt.BUT, I would have it checked first before buying new.Autozone and the others do this for free.If you have added a lot of extra electrical stuff to your car you may exeed output of altenator also.
Also does it drop with heater blower on, not A/C? How about headlights?Should check that as maybe you have an A/C problem?

I remember buying brush kits and rebuilding alternators when I was in high school. I rebuilt more than one. I haven't rebuilt one in many years though.
