Sebring Silver Metalic- 2002 Camaro Z28
What is falling off my car?
I have a 99 z28 w/ about 104k+ miles. Over the past couple of weeks I have noticed something in my driveway near the rear of where my car would be parked. It looks like some kind of old dried foam stuff. Its black on the outside, a dirty yellow color on the inside, and kind of firm or dense. The size of the chunks are like a golf ball or twice in size.

I would look under the car for something. Could be a bushing or some body sealant. Could also be something you ran over in the road that was stuck and is now coming loose. Is there a hole in your muffler?

it was raining earlier...yeah I can take a pic. I will also go out and crawl under and look around.
exhaust still sounds stock, and i haven't noticed a whole.

you can scroll to the bottom and look for "my car is falling apart."

The stuff falling off seems to be something bolted to the body above the rear axle. In the pic you can see part of the rear spring. The photo is of the passenger rear. The driver rear looks old, but still intact, for now.
I have no idea what this stuff is.

That's your bump stop. It keeps the axle from hitting the body during hits on your suspension. Either something happened to it when you replaced your suspension, or it started dryrotting off (?).
I know of people that have removed theirs completely although I wouldn't. You can probably find one relatively inexpensive from one of our sponsors.

i would say dry rot, it is very old and dry looking and feeling.
I replaced my rear shocks a few months ago. I haven't replaced anything else in the rear suspension.
does the suspension really travel that far that you need a bump stop?
BTW, what is the best name to use for searching or does any have a part number?

Just bump stop. You could probably get it from gmpartsdirect. I would replace both sides.

I think it's actually called a "jounce bumper".

I searched GM Parts Direct looking for this part.
Is part number 7 in the illustration the part I am looking for?

Yep that's it - funny how they call parts different things...GM calls the driveshaft a "propeller" shaft.
