You got headers? It's a rear O2 code. If you have headers or any other reason to not have the rear sensors in the car you need to get the rear O2's tuned out. Kinda need more info before anyone can really recommend anything.

    I have a stock cat but the thing is its a v6 not a v8. I own a 2002 Pontiac firebird.

The strange thing is it doesn't set off the SES light all the time just every now and then.
You say it's a rear 02 sensor IH8EVRY1? Where about would this one be located? Is it the one after the cat?

If you have a stock set up even on a V6 that code is still the down stream sensor. So...yup, it should be behind the cat. How many miles? I'm going to quickly get out of my knowledge level on all of this but if the car has a lot of miles it may be a bad sensor. Hard to say and if you just start replacing stuff you end up throwing money at it hoping you fix it.

I'd get under there and make sure the plug looks of where it hooks into the harness. Make sure the wires aren't broken or pinched or grounded on anything. Other than that on a stock set up...? I don't know how to tell if a sensor is bad by looking at it.

Could possibly be your cat going bad also. How does the car drive? Do you feel any lose in power? If not, I would guess a bad O2 or even an exhaust leak downstream.

Check the simple and least expensive things first as mentioned: burnt wire.

as far as the power goes it doesn't feel like a lose of power but I did just recently have the exhaust fixed. I'm not sure if that may have something to do with this but it did start to happen after I got it fixed..

how far back after the cat is the 02 sensor? If it's not that hard to get to maybe I could replace it myself and see what happens....

Never looked at the rear sensor(s) on a v6 car but the sensor should be about a foot behind the cat. It certainly won't be far. If you've never seen one, it reminds me of a spark plug sticking out of my exhaust. Do yourself a favor if you are going to try that though. Go to (auto parts store of your choice) and rent their o2 sockets. You can't get a regular impact socket on it without cutting the socket and most wrenches would probably strip the sensor.
