I';m not going to waste 25 dollars worth of oil but i may drain it and save it.Put some Rotella back in to see if it gets quiet again. Its only at around 35 mph but it seems to be getting worse everytime i drive it.Only started since i change out that oil a few weeks ago.Just my luck i guess.

    New whine type noise?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seems I have developed or now have a more pronounced whine or chatter type noise.

It happens mostly between 1-1700 rpm and more noticible in the lower gears 2-4. I am not sure if it is in my tranny, diffs or my tires? It sounds like differential noise or luged tire whine -but I have not had it before. While going down the hwy if I push down on the clutch it immediately gets quieter. If I let up on the accelerator it get quieter also? It seems speed related in the faster I go the more pronounced it is yet at 60 or so it is not as noticible?

I recently went with all Amsoil fluids. I changed my front and rear diffs to the lighter weight gear oil. The tires are BFG AT's with around 35K on them but lots of tread left.

Would lighter gear oil make the diff louder or whine more especially since it has been very hot up here? I never noticed it with the heavier weight royal purple?

How about the tires, can they whine more as they wear down? Last thing I guess is the transfer case-does anything in there cause a whine?

I checked the diff fluid and it is full. Tires are at the right pressure.

    thanks

I don't spook easy but this is worrying now.Riv

What year and model? I went to Amsoils site and they call for 75-140 in most the Jeep models....I dunno....seems sorta thin to me....different brands have different charecteristics.....whatever the recommended weight is many folks forget that is the "recommended" not required. Hell if I was getting some whine I'd go up to 75-110 and see how that feels and sounds......or just go back to Rotella....

    Differential, Rear W/O TT.....GL-5[5]
    All Temps......80W-90
off Amsoil site.I'm going to to save the oil and just try the Rotella to see if that it.A little noise won't hurt anything.

You know Rivi...been thinking here.....why wouldnt you do a 3/4-1/4 mix of 80-90 and 1/4 of 75-140....I bet that would get that rear end to STFU...

I just think in a well worn diff...a tad thicker doesn't hurt. I cant find diddly squat on the viscosity on Rotella.....I suspect it is in the upper of the 90 weights though....

Well it is for heavy duty truck applications, thats why i bought it.Walmart had it very cheap too.I figured i'd put Amsoil in just for some extra protection.I'm thinking either adding a pint of Amsoil 75-140(thats all have left) or saving the old Amsoil and refilling with Rotella just to see if it quiets it down OR just forget about it see what happens.

Yeah....I bet it is thick as shit....the Rotella that is....Pour some of that Asmoil 75-140 in there like you said...I bet it quiets things down....

What about using F type modifer in TX?

Sarge - Is a GM or F type modifiers ever used in a M6?
Would there be trade-offs of doing so?

No different environment.....dont need it nor would I put it in my mixer. Yeah I would think it may cause a much harder shift...as that stuff is designed to make metal "grab"....thus the friction provided to lock up your limited slip.....

I bought Rotella 80-90 to put back in,the rears are just getting too noisy with the Amsoil. Now at faster speeds its starting whine,i'm very disappointed in the Amsoil.I'm not sure why this happened but if it ruined anything Amsoil is getting a bill!

I just think your running a too light viscosity in a well used rear end with a little "slop" in it.....go with what works though....did you pour some of the 75-140 in it?

no i didn't get a chance and to be honest if i gotta go back in there its getting what worked in the 1st place.I bought Rotella 80-90 and Rotella 85-140,i'm putting in 1 qt 80-90 rotella,1/3 qt Rotella 85-140 and what ever amount it needs to top off(about 1/3 qt)i'm using the Amsoil 75-90.I don't care if monkeys fly outta my rear end afterwards i;m done with it.
