Get a new GM factory waterpump. All the aftermarket ones I've seen are junk, and the electric ones are extremely expensive and have a very limited service life before needing to be rebuilt.

The only GM waterpump they sell now is the short-neck LS1 style, which uses the new aluminum style gaskets. The overall length is slightly shorter to compensate for the new thicker gaskets, which replaced the paper ones used in the earlier LS1's.

Check out eBay, you can find a brand new GM pump for around $130.

I agree with getting a new gm unit. When i ordered mine through my buddies shop, they originally brought me an aftermarket unit. When they finally brought me the ac delco one, i compared the two and the ac delco one was far superior in quality and the finish in my opinion. I later found out by being helped through this forum that i had received the newer style 04+ water pump, which has a different thermostat and housing, so i couldnt reuse my old 160 stat and had to order the new style one. If you got a colder stat, just make sure you order it before you start taking it apart so you can do it all at once. I got mine in the mail recently and now i gotta crack open the cooling sys. again to install my new stat. Hope this helps!

Thanks to BlackSS01 for saving the day (how appropriate his superman avatar is!) He's shipping one soon.

Does anyone know what RTV sealant should be used on a new pump?

As long as its got aluminum gaskets...as all the new LS pumps should have...absolutely NONE. No RTV is necessary with aluminum gaskets.

I have always had good luck with Permatex Ultra Copper -- just don't overdo it. Haven't had to mess with my water pump yet though (and do not want too!)

I used some red RTV just to get the gaskets to stick while i shoved the pump into place. Metal gaskets are ok

That should definitely be a short neck style pump with aluminum gaskets.
