VIN questions

Well I got a few questions about the vin.

1. What is an RPO code? Are they in the vin or seperate? If seperate where are they?
2. What is the purpose of the check digit?

I used this site http://www.transamworld.com/4genvins.php to decode my vin and these are the questions I came up with.


Also can someone explain the difference between manual and automatic retraints? I'm confused as to what is manual/automatic about them.

RPO = Regular Production Options

Essentially the Modern RPO code sticker on your vehicle is akin to the Build Sheet of the early years.

3 digit RPO codes signify how you vehicle was equipped, body color, interior color, upholstery material, rear end ratio, engine type, wheels, tires, etc. . . .

I believe they are referring to air bags vs. non air bag models for the restraint questions.

where can I find info to decode a 2000 Z28's VIN?

I believe that transamworld.com link in the first post is a F-body decoder, only difference would be the 3rd digit (1=Chev, 2=Pont).
