Turning Back the Odometer
Hi again. I am looking to buy a 2002 Camaro SS, Firebird or Trans Am. I have found several with miles less than 10,000 miles on them. What I was wondering is is it easy to lower the miles on a digital odometer to make it look like its lower than it really is. I was going to wait for the new 2010 Camaro but I am not going to pay that much for a car when GM may bite the bullet in the near future. Any ideas.

Red Tint Jewelcoat- 2008 Trailblazer SS
I am sure there are ways...
But even in reverse it clicks forward.
But it isn't really worth it on a Camaro/Firebird. And people probably kept the mileage low on 2002's on purpose, knowing it was the last year.

So the general consensus is that the cars I am looking at with less than 10K miles on them are for real. I want to get an SS or a Ram Air Transam and they are very afordable. BTW I do not want to change an odometer. I work out of the country most of the year and whatever I own always has low mileage when I get ready to sell it. I buy and restore older cars and mostly stang and f100s since they are usually easier to find then the gm products. My last completed project was a 1966 tbird with a 428. One bad arse car. But anyone with any sense knows that the LS1 and its many editions since the 90s are easier to coax power out of and frankly the camaro/firebirds still look better then the new stangs. Even though the new stangs are much better looking then the last version.

I think I saw your car for sale on ebay or craigslist. I did not know that color existed. My triumph mc is the same color from the factory and that color would be a shoe in but I am trying to keep my cost down. My big dilemma is that I am heading to Chile tomorrow and I cannot buy the car until I get back in mid December and on top of that I am in the process of closing on a new home loan and I cannot put anything on my credit until it closes. My wife will close on the house near the end of the month and I will have me a nice LS1 equipped car shortly after I get home. I am restoring a 72 mustang right now and that is my actual everyday car. Its in the paint shop right now and its been there for 4 months. I am getting tired of not having a nice car so this one will be my new everyday car while I restore others. I found a 69 Firebird in Galveston but that one is going to need some work and I do not have the time to do it right now. Man there are so many nice older cars out there right now while the economy is crashing. And for once I saved all of my change and can afford to buy them. LOL

I do not know who you are or your reputation but what I am asking is if one of you LS1 owners knows if it can be done. I did not ask how to do it since that would be illegal. I do not want to know how, I just want to make sure it can not be done because I want to buy a car and I want to make sure one of the sellers cannot screw me over. I work on cars all the time but I have no idea if a digital odometer can be cheated.Last edited by Fordication; 11-17-2008 at 07:36 PM.

No, it is not easy to 'lower the miles' on such cars, and it is highly unlikely that any you see for sale have done it. The penalty is much more severe than the $ benefit for the perp, so don't worry about it at all.
So, go ahead and buy one of those low mileage 2002s out there and enjoy!

Thanks to all of you. I just talked a seller into a fantastic deal on a 2001 SS with less than 6K miles on it. I sent him $1000 to hold the car until I get back but when I do I am flying straight into his town and driving it home. Let the customer pay for my flight and with gas getting cheaper by the day this will be a cheap pickup.
Gator thanks for making me feel more comfortable about that odometer. I was hoping to hear that more than you know. Ed

Why is carfax a joke? I assume you know something or have had a bad experience with them.
