4.5 hrs labor (per alldata online with auto trans)
    spark plugs (NGK TR55) = $20
    plug wires (taylor) = $50
    fuel filter (delco) = $20
    air filter (fram) = $10
    dexcool (prestone 2 gal) = $24
accessory belt (goodyear gatorback) = $35
ac belt (goodyear gatorback) = $20
trans fluid (dextron III mercon) 5 qts = $15
    trans filter & gask = $15
    oil filter = $5
    synthetic oil = $40
forgot pcv valve (2 of them) = $10

total parts of aprox $265 (from autozone/thunder racing etc etc)

if your bay area labor rate will be between $120-$180
    4.5 x $120 = $540 up to 4.5 x $180 = 810
so $1,000-ish for your area isnt uncomomn... depending on their labor rate

alot of dealerships... AKA STEALerships in your area no longer provide a labor rate... but a $$$ ammount per job (even though it is illegal to "not have a labor rate" ...)

im not agreeing its reasonable or defending them by any means but just letting you know why....

also "customer pay pricing" aka Matrix pricing will mark up your parts from MSRP by GM up to 150% gm list pricing

With regards to the SES light, make sure your MAF is clean, especially if you have been running an oil air filter (i.e. K&N). Oil/grime will collect and set it off.

IMO tune-ups should always be done by the owner...you can put better quality parts in for cheaper while a shop will put cheaper parts in for more money. The plugs are a PITA but you'll live...

And if I call on the phone I get a different quote than if I show up in person. "Well, it could be this... or it could be that..."

LS1Z28 - Do you know what the book time is for a major tune-up? And someone on another thread said that changing the wires is a waste of money - is that true?

Inmy01TA - I just might drive back to Maryland and take you up on the offer... I drove my old red '85 Z28 from Baltimore to California back in '87.

I'll do it for that, plus I'm closer.

As stated, do some reading/research get some tools and have it. You will learn a lot by doing it yourself...

how much of that labor rate do the mechanics actually get? i've always wondered that.. i asked the motorcycle shop one day.. their labor rate was $75 an hour. so i asked how much of that the mech's got. and the Manager told me, "i don't know how much my guys make" WTF??? you're the manager, and you don't know.. are you fucking serious?

Yea don't go to the dealership. They recently screwed me hard out of $828. The car drove worse after they were done. Easy stuff like a general tune up is a good place to start if you are a mech newb anyway. At least get the code scanned at autozone (free) before you start. Just post or search the code number and you will get lots of replies on what to do. Thats the only imminent issue for inspections...

i needed to go to a dealer once because i couldnt find a front blinker socket ANYWHERE. water kept getting in it, corroding the socket and blowing the bulb. the dealer was the only place that had it. $65.00!! that was 2 months ago and im still mad at myself for buyin it. i couldve just replaced the bulbs until i died and saved money. just get involved and start mingling around your city/on here, etc. ive been amazed at how many people are willing to help out for free.

the water gets in because the lense has a small crack in it!!!!! the socket was fine!!! its gonna just blow bulbs until you change out the lense.I had the same trouble and eventually found a small crack in the lense letting water get in.

Your average mech (in florida anyway) makes about 14-20/hr FLAT RATE. Meaning, if they do the job that is rated for 4 hours, they get paid for 4 hours, even if it took them 2... or 6.

So out of that 75 buck an hour, then mech prolly isn't getting more then 20 of it. The entire car repair industry is a bloated overcharging glutton...
