    TRIP Mileage Reset?

everytime i get in my car my trip mileage is reset.
i know for a fact that i am not hitting the button to rest it.
yet everytime i get in the car its back to zero.
its only done it recently (started it like 3 weeks ago and progressively got more frequent???)
and it does it everytime the car is off for like 30+ minutes.. but when its only off for a few minutes it still stays set.
    wtf lol any ideas?

is the car cranking slow? Low voltage can cause the trip to reset.

Just to be safe, check your battery terminals to make sure they are tight. If you have a Delco battery, check the terminals as they tend to fall out of the battery casing.

The tripometer resets similar to how the clock in the radio resets when you disconnect the battery. Probably not a fuse problem. If its not voltage related then you might have an internal problem with your instrument cluster

Doesn't hurt to ask a dealer or an automotive electrician.

I swear to God!! My car is sneaking into my office at night and reading the internet!!!

Started doing the same thing this morning.... grumble grumble...

The only reason I noticed was I happened to be looking at the gas gauge on start up, saw it spike to full, then gently drift back to empty. Wait... there's a bit under half a tank there... looking at it, had car in reverse, tapped the gas and it went to the correct level. Odd, look over at the other gauges, see 0.0 on the trip.

Reset on start up coming home from the store too. I need to send the pcm to Frost for a tune shortly, so I'll add, clean-up battery to the list and hope that's it. No aftermarket stereo/mods done to electrical systems.

Common issue on the '99 cars, it's low battery voltage. GM issued a TSB on it to replace the gauge cluster, but a good/charged battery makes it go away.

so did GM have a recall or something that the original owner just missed or neglected?

No recall, just a TSB and was covered under the original warranty. Here's the number/title: 99-08-49-009 Trip Odometer Resets to Zero (Exchange/Install Instrument Cluster).

A good battery should make it go away - bring it somewhere for a free load test if it bugs you. I wouldn't bother replacing the cluster and live with the trip reset/gauges sweep on start up if it's not the battery.
