if its an 03 it should have a 4.7L or a 5.7L hemi, 02 was the last year for the 5.9L. But as for the truck its self I've had mine for going on 6 years and haven't had any problems except the gas mileage

According to one source, the 5.9 was available in 2003, along with the 3.7, 4.7, and 5.7 Hemi.

I 100% agree that the Hemi is a better motor though. The 5.9 (360ci) is ancient, it dates back to the 60's. It still had a distributor all the way up to its last year of production as well. The Hemi also has exactly 100 extra HP, which is a huge difference in performance, and especially impressive considering the Hemi is .2L smaller.

the 5.9 may have been available in the 2500 and 3500 trucks in 03 but not the 1500. 02 was the only year it was in the newer generation ram 1500. like you said its a very old motor that hasn't had any major changes since the mid 80's and they are pretty weak stock 245 hp and 330lb/ft.

Can't say I agree with most here. I have known 2 people who have owned new dodge trucks (2006 3500 Diesel and 2008 2500) and don't care for them at all.

My cousin with the 3500 owned an 2003? F-250 Diesel and beats the crap out of his trucks (used them to pull other trucks out of the mud at work) and after spending 5k on transmission, tune and exhaust work, I saw how pathetic the Dodge's performance was compared to the Ford (Ford had exhaust, CAI and tuned). He regretted trading the Ford in for the Dodge so much he turned it back in 3 months later for another Ford.

I worked for a guy who bought a brand new 2008 2500 and doesn't beat on it ever. He has had to replace the front bearing twice now. Took it to the dealership each time for the repair, not that that says much.

I realize every truck/company has problems, but around here (in the older department), all you see is Fords and a few Chevy's. Rarely a Dodge. Ford has always be renowned for thier trucks, more than any other company, over the past several decades.

Looking from the otherside, Dodge has made leaps and bounds with their products compared to previous years. And they have remained one of the cheaper trucks to purchase as well. But, that doesn't always mean they're better.

I'd go drive a few of them within your budget and go from there, drive the sh1t out of them!

There is a big difference between 1500s and heavy duty rams (2500& 3500) and from how i took the OP he is looking for a 1/2 ton

I saw that, I was just commenting on Dodge's product line. That's all. Don't know if it's useful info to the OP or not, just throughing it out there.
