Blackened fire chicken- 2000 Pontiac Trans Am WS6
Think i need a new A.I.R. pump
recently my trans am will make a really crappy noise coming from the exhaust when i start the car, like a whining/humming, definitely not a normal noise. then i noticed it just stops as soon as the a.i.r. pump turns off…doesn't happen all the time either. and the noise is coming from the drivers side area of the engine bay as well…any ideas

just going by what you're describing I'd say you're on the right track. Not sure if I have mine here but if I do you can have it. I may have gave it away over the years but I'll look and see. If I have it......it's yours.

thanks orion…lemme know.
also, does taking off the a.i.r. system affect the cats? I know it will throw codes that i can have tuned out, but just wondering if it actually affects the cats in a negative way…thanks.

no....it just injects air into the exhaust stream so the cats heat up faster and start doing their job sooner. I see your in Cali.....lots of people get around the emission laws out there but they're by far the most strict about it. If you can get around that then just remove the cats and call it a day.

they are strict about the cats out here though…funny, i was just talking about this with my friend how dumb the rule is for cats out here in cali, basically you can't move the location of the cats from its stock location, which is basically why we can't have long tube headers, because the move the cats further down the exhaust stream, but you still have cats, so whats the difference!
…but i just passed this year without my egr, so i think i can get away with getting rid of the air systemLast edited by godless-phoenix; 11-13-2013 at 08:40 PM.

so i just went ahead and unplugged the A.I.R. pump, went to my tuner, and had him tune out the secondary a.i.r. system for me…noise hasn't come back since then. Now I'm going to just tear the rest of that crap out when i get the plugs for the exhaust manifold

Nice! I know you will appreciate how the removal cleans up the engine bay a bit...it also makes it easier when your are changing the spark plugs and wires...not to mention tightening the exhaust manifold bolts.......congrats.

I ditched the secondary air system not too long after we bought the car. It does clean things up a bit.

When the air system is removed, and the stupid egr system also, I think it cleans the engine bay up a ton. Also takes away a lil bit of weight, so now it's a tad faster!! WIN WIN!!
