hmmmm, wow that does add up fast.

I am curious as to what these things are fixing that would cure the tapping?

Is it that the OEM units dont work as well as they age? Cause, I sure didnt have this problem on the engine till about 60k miles.

I would first try buying a NEW factory coil and swapping that out till you find the bad coil or coils if that is your problem. The MSD units arent cheap... $67.00 a piece from Summit Racing, X's 8= $536.00 for the whole set. Like I said... Unless you want to upgrade to these multi-spark units anyways, I would first buy a brand new factory unit to test for the bad one first. The MSD part number for the coils are... (8245) From summit racing the direct part number is (MSD-8245)
PS. Hey Sarge... I believe the sound sounds more like an arc but I checked the engine compartment at night ans saw no sights of lightning in the engine bay. Maybe its arcing inside the coil itself??

I was at first positive that it was an exaust leak because it would tap right in sync with the corosponding piston firing or on the exaust stroke, So once I found that it was the coil it made perfect sense.... The tapping was every time the #3 fired. If you have multiple coils ticking then it will be noticiable by a much more faster ticking sound than a single coil. ex. 2 coils=twice the ticking.
