I wouldn't consider a gasket that held up for 8-10 years to continuous exposure to the elements a defect.

Yepp, Not a defect or recall, just time and element abuse getting the best of them. You can pick up replacement tail-lights fairly cheap.

I wonder if drilling a drain hole on the bottom after removing them to drain the water that is in them now, and then, putting a thin bead of silicone around the edge or wherever would do the trick instead of buying new ones.

Try that for what its worth.

negative, the chrome peels from the inside. Once there is water in there the chrome peels off.

    Cheap... new or used?

Used I would search the forums and eGay.

Brand new I would go to GM Parts Direct. 230 bucks a peice..... over 350 from a stealership!!!

just take and run a bead of black rtv all the way around the inside lip of the lens where it meets the housing. If you are good enough and have a steady hand you can do it and it not be seen. I have done it on both of my Camaros and it is not noticeable. I smoothed it out with my finger to make sure it got into every spot.

x2!! The problem is not the gasket where the sockets go in( water should'nt get in the car) , but it lies where the clear lens and the black housing are mated. If, with the hatch shut, you look closely at your taillights you'll see where they are mated together alll the way around. Well after this is glued together some dumbass form the G.M. line has the job of deburring the edges that were left from the production of the lenses. ( like a model car where the pieces are all molded onto the tree ( whatever you want to call it) and you must bend and break off all the little pieces then glue them together) The edges left after you break them off is what basically some dude at G.M. does and grinds off the edges. Never does he reseal where he ground. If you lok where I described all around the light you'l see little chips off the acrylic lense ( clear part) where they were ground with a little die grinder of sorts.
On a side note, I figured this out after wanting to replace mine with BRAND NEW dealership parts. After 3 attempts at getting a new light I gave up. Each one from G.M.s stock had worse chips around the edge than my factory ones did and I could just see them fucking up again after a few months and for the 240 bucks each for some shitty looking lights I finally told them I want my money back. ( had to pay first to order them) . So if you need new ones be sure you look closely at what you receive because the ones you have may be better. At least you'll want to reseal them as described by previous post., even on NEW lights. Sorry so long but I have first hand experience at this one!!!
