T56 Input shaft play
So....dropped my transmission last night...Kinda proud it only took an hour (No lift, on jack stands, in hm garage, no trans jack, even had to take the center console apart too for the shifter), new personal best.
Get it out from under the car and I notice my input shaft has a lot of free play....like 1/2" to full inch side to side, like I can make it wobble. It wasn't like that when it went in.....
Gotta feeling this is going to be more expensive then I thought.....

T56 Input shaft play
Won't know till the shop breaks it down and sends me pics. I'm sure that bearing is toast. I just hope it didn't screw up the front plate & gears...
Fluid came out clean & no metal shavings. In fact the only thing that was showing problems was I couldn't get into 4th.http://www.ls1.com/forums/f7/my-6-liter-build-174257/

I recall some play in the input shaft on the old school manual transmissions I have rebuilt, but nothing to that degree.

My buddy's shop is doing the work this time, his boss works on the T56's, he saw that and ask. "so what engine was this on?" "The rear didn't break either?"
He's suppose to shoot me some pics of what they find. At this point all I can do is laugh it off.....

I've seen incorrectly aligned pilot bushings do that after a few thousand miles. Usually it's been a case of not taking the time to check bellhousing alignment.
Factory stuff is "usually" okay but no guarantee. You run into bigger problems with aftermarket bellhousings and/or engines that have had the main saddles align bored.
Either one of those scenario's and I find offset dowel pins are a must to correct the pilot bushing/input shaft alignment.
And yes, when you have THAT much play you have probably gotten into replacing some gears. Although the pilot bushing does keep it somewhat in check so you might get lucky.
How did the pilot bushing look?Last edited by Firebirdjones; 07-29-2015 at 02:19 PM.

Pilot bearing looked ok, but I'll dig into it more this weekend.
Never had an issue with this bell housing (Going on 6 yrs now).

Very easy fix, the bearing retainer sleeve broke on you. Simply unbolt the front cover and press in a new one. I have some disassembly videos on the t56
