just a noob question, how do gas caps fail?? lose the key?

I had 2. One was a combination lock the other had a had, but when it was unlocked (or the combination was set), the cap would just turn, but not turn off the gas neck. Kinda like turning the cap on a medicine bottle without pushing it down.

That is a smart move, turning it into your insurance. I would have never thought of that. I guess it would be covered under vandalism or something like that.
