    Steering column pivot pin

Hi, i am having problems with the pivot pin on my steering column. It seems to be a common problem with pontiacs. I had a 94 Grand Am in the past and had the exact same problem. There are two pins in the column that allows it to rotate up and down. One is loose, and keeps falling out. It is a very small pin, maybe 3/4 of an inch long, and a 1/4 inch thick. I have had to take the column apart a few times already. It jsut keeps falling out. I have to pull down on the steering wheel when I shut it off,or else i can pull the key and it is still running, or it shuts off, but all the accessories are still on. My girl is afraid it will shut off on her on the highway if she moves it, and she has a valid point. It seems that this pin needs to be loose to pivot, but it won't stay in. Any ideas? Oh, there are two, only one is giving me problems....for now.

the tilt column on our cars is made from pop steel. The ears that hold the pins break and you get the wiggle in the wheel. My first car was a 94 camaro. I could move the steering wheel around on the pivot. The only fix was to replace the column as the ear broke off the upper portion. My 02 TA has the same problem but not as bad. I never had an ignition issue. I see your point though.

Column will run you 3-600 probably depending where you get it from
