starting problem
First of all over the last 6 months I have replaced the battery, alternator & starter (in that order). Everything has been fine until this morning when I tried to leave for work it wouldn't start and I had to jump it off. I went to start it a few minutes ago and it acted as though it was going to start and then everything went dead as a hammer as soon as I turned the key. Now nothing is working. Anyone have any suggestions???

Why did you replace the battery, and alt? Were you having problems?
Sounds like just a dead battery, get it running again and have the system load tested. That will test the entire charging system. Local parts stores do it for free. Do you have a multimeter? You can also check it that way. Are your battery terminals good and tight? Clean?

Yeah it was actually my alternator that was pulling the battery down but I didn't figure that out until it was too late. Then two weeks ago my starter went out and I figured no big deal it's 10 years old afterall but now I don't know what's going on.

So the battery was drained by the alt previously? The battery might be done, have the system checked and see if you have a warranty on the battery.
Which alt did you replace it with?

That's what I was thinking. I replaced it with a new one from Advance (pallidium or something like that). I doubt the battery has a warranty b/c I got it from walmart b/c they were the only place open at the time and I had to get to work.

Since you had already replaced the battery and alt I would look more at the cables first. Check your cable ends and make sure they're not corroded. Might look fine on the outside but peel back a little bit of the insulator and look at the wires just past the connectors and make sure they aren't corroded.

I know that before I replaced the alternator that it was already draining my new battery so I hope that's what it is but I do wonder if one of my wires that run right next to the aftermarket headers going to the starter haven't went bad. I'm going to check that first before I leave work today.

Pewter Metallic- 2000 NHRA Trans Am
Mine just did the EXACT SAME THING!!!
I don't think it has to do with the battery. I pushed and pulled the cables and it came on. No battery problems prior. Ran fine after going through the computers relearn cycle. Shut it off, then it started normal a couple times, then it was dead.
What happens is it gets all the lights on as you turn the key... then it just dies. Then it is all dead.Last edited by mariner3302; 09-24-2007 at 04:38 PM.
