Did you fully charge the new battery before you placed it into service?

Yes, I charged it for over an hour. It was reading 12.7 volts at the post.

Can I have the starter tested to see if it is pulling too much volts?

I dont know jack about the ls1 starters but if they have a solenoid it could be going bad. Autozone can test them I think.

I know most of our relays are the same kind. I would switch a similar relay with the ignition if possible

I just replaced the starter - motor control relay and that was the problem.

    Thanks for all the help!

Mine was doing the same thing. I think RetiredCop was having it too. He replaced the starter and fixed it. Mine would just not make any sound at all, just turn the key and nothing, gauges and dash lights would all work, but just nothing. Even had a jump and nothing happened. I replaced my starter, and it has started every time since.

Note to all. Cranking engine does not mean good starter and solenoid.

We'll see this kind of post again. This type of starter failure has gotten to be more common place...because starters are better now-a-days.

The starter was fine, it was the starter motor control relay

    Oops!

Sorry, I cross-threaded. I thought this was one for cranking and no start. I'd forgot about this one. Glad you got it! How much did the relay set you back?

Mine was doing this same thing also. I replaced the starter relay switch, clutch actuator, ignition switch and the fuses. I still get intermittent issues when trying to start the car. It's driving me nuts! The starter is the last thing that I am going to try. Hopefully this works for me. Anybody else have these issues? Let me know. These cars are too sweet to give up on!

It is in one of the boxes under the hood. Owner's manual shows the assignments.

The relay was only 9 dollars. It's funny a part that cheap can cause so many headaches

Always start with the cheapest POS part first. I was driving my uncles blazer with a swapped l98 corvette engine(bottom end) and it was getting no fuel. Pump wouldnt prime.. changed it out with one in the shop.. no change.. did some looking and found a random fuze plug and the fuze was burnt .. it was mounted to the firewall.. changed it and it worked....

Well, to those that said battery were right in my case. Battery wasn't putting out the right voltage for the security system so, it did just that. Replaced the battery and the problem is gone for now.

Stay tuned. My fingers are crossed that the VATS are fine.

Nice. Well, today it started doing it again. After the new battery on Tuesday, I came outside today (Thursday) to go to lunch. Car wouldn't start and the voltmeter was in the red when I had the key on. All gauges sweep right, security light on and no start.

Did this a few times and walked back inside the building with a few cuss words on my tongue.

Called the flatbed, waited inside for about an hour and then walked out to the car to wait. Got inside just to see if it was still repeatable. Sure enough, the bitch cranks.

I was so pissed that I drove it right back to Weber and told them I'm not paying for anything any longer on the vehicle and that something is warranty covered on it this time.

They still have it and you may even see me on the news if they don't fix it.

I'm thinking starter solenoid since they already told me that the alternator was charging fine and the key lock cylinder (VATS) was fine.

That intermittent...relays and contactors, etc. are notorious for this. Has to be the soleniod.

There seems to be a lot of starter and contactor issues around the board!

I highly doubt there is any interest, but I would show anyone who wants to know how to take a cheap meter that is good for only for a few amps and measure large currents. (A stop by Radio Shit is required and you then can use a volt measurement. And you have to do a few lines of math.)

Well...I guess I am assuming this is the reason people aren't putting meters on these and some other problems???
