    Starter replacement

I think my starter went and was wondering if its a big job to replace. My 98 SS, 15,000 miles, wasnt used over the winter and I only started it up a couple of times. When I went to start it last week the starter gave me the dead battery clicking noise. I charged the battery and when I turned it over it made a loud mechanical breaking sound but then turned over and drove fine. When I restarted again to see if the noise was gone it again made that loud noise. I havent got under it yet to pull the starter but thought it would be worth getting some prior insight. Could it also be a problem with my flex plate?

The starter takes like 5-10 minutes to switch if you have your wrenches handy.

unhook your battery, unhook the wires on the back of the starter, pull out the two starter bolts on the bottom and it's out.

Yepp like said above simple job, just make sure you disconnect your battery first. When you get it removed you can take a look at the teeth and see if they are sheared.
Depending on how dead your battery is or was, may not be engaging the starter far enough which is causing it to slip.
Might want to check out the battery to ensure its holding a full charge first.

I just removed the starter this morning very easy! Also found out what my problem was, the small ear on the starter housing for the short bolt was broken.

Be glad you weren't trying to do this on the v6. as i found out, theres a plate that has to be removed to get to the starter. very frustrating.....

I have a 2002 SS conv. with 6200 on the odometer. My summer toy but work seems to get to overwhelming to go out and play.
