A Squeak That Wakes the Dead

I have no idea... I have replaced...

    1. Serpentine Belt
    2. Ideler Pulley
    3. Tensioner Pulley
    4. And soaked the belt in "Belt Dressing"

When the car is cold it is a HORRIBLE squeak that you can easily hear over my exhaust. This damn thing is so loud, when I come home my girlfreind (in the 3rd story apartment) can hear it over the TV. When warm it gets a bit quieter but not much. I can't stand it much longer. Any Ideas?

I'm assuming you can't tell where it's coming from. Is it a squeak or a squeal? Does it sound like a pulley squeaking or is more like a belt squealing on the pulley? One way to try and narrow it down is using a redneck stethoscope. Take a long screwdriver and put it on the power steering pump and put your ear to it and see if that's where the noise is coming from. If not then move to the alternator then a/c ect ect. You will know it when you find it using that method but be careful not to get caught up in the belts and have your face ripped off. If you have long hair you may want to borrow a scrunchy off of your girlfriend. I've narrowed down bad pulleys using that method so I know it works. Just maybe not the safest or smartest thing to do.

    Safe? Smart? Pssh....

Only problem is I dont have a long screwdriver... though I do have a butcher knife, I assume that would work too. (Just need to get it past the misses)

Screwdriver...butcher knife. It doesn't matter. The important thing is to have your face near some spinning belts holding something metal up to your head. Just doesn't even sound smart does it?? It works though.

    Want a new car

If its a squeek noise try tightening all the header bolts. The header/manifold can squeek pretty bad on just a little play in one of the bolts.

I have this same problem. I know it's coming from the passenger side somewhere &* I know it's not the accessory belt or tensioner b/c I replaced those.

Guy came in today with the same problem, said pretty much the same things too.

He took out his alternator and put it on our testing machine (which spins it at a quick rate) and the thing just SQUEALED as loud as anything.

Turns out the bearings in his alt. were bad/shot.

You didn't say which side the noise was from, so maybe that's your problem.
