sometimes only 1 tire spinning....
was having a little fun tonight and when gassing it pulling onto the main road, it felt like only one tire was spinning....this happened twice. I finally pulled into a parking lot and did a quick little burnout to see if in fact only one time was spinning. after the burnout, i got out and saw 2 strips of rubber.
is it possible that the diff can lock only half the time??? i don' tknow much about differentials, but i remember reading that the posi additive is what helps with the locking. the car has 62,000 miles and i don't know if the rear end fluid has been changed at all. it's been on my to-do list, just haven't gotten to it yet
any insight would be greatly appreciated

The cars stock were auburn LSD clutch style. Some people say you can rebuild them but most replace them. You can "burn up" the clutch pack but it basically means wearing them too smooth. Some times if the fluid is changed and the additive is not put back in it will work fine for a while and then one day it just stops. also over filling the rear will cause the clutch pack to have to much oil in it and cause them to slip and wear out. pull the top plug on the rear and check fluid level and see if it is toast. Some times if you have trouble with it working adding two bottles of additive will help for a while. Use the GM stuff though if you put 2 bottles in after changing the gear fluid.
Because the gears are so small in F-bodies you don't need a lsd to make both tires spin in a straight line or turning left. I have an 83 transam 5speed that has an open carrier and it will lay 2 strips of rubber in a straight line and go into a long 4 wheel drift turning to the left and sometime to the right if the turn is not to sharp and enough load is kept on the right rear tire. A lot of times the auburn unit takes a crap and people don't even realize it because the rear gears are small enough to just transfer the momentum through to the free wheel axle.Last edited by JaycenK; 06-16-2009 at 10:17 PM.

I was chatting with Luos last night, and he said it's kind of a common thing to have the passenger side one-wheel it on slow right had turns?
If I rev it up a little and dump it, it usually sends me into a slide regardless of straight/left/right. It was just on those slow right hand turns mashing it from an idle.
How much different are the Torsens compared to the Auburns?

You can easiley over power the lsd on a right turn the key is if you have it working part of the time it becomes a real handful because you can start out with posi and you wil drive it like it's a posi in a slide but then the clutches give up and your in between one wheel wonder and posi so the car is iratic and a true handfull. Best time to see if it is working is when the road is wet. if you take off in a straight line and both wheels spin all the way through 1st gear chances are that it is working just fine. right now for me: mine is not working right and when I start out on wet it will spin both and then I will over power my weak ass clutches and one wheel wonder kicks in and it is a handfull.
