Shifter
Have a 1998 Camaro SS LS1 has anyone tried a MGW shifter. I was going to get a Hurst, but my uncle has a stang with a MGW and says its better than PRO 50 or Hurst. Anyone with a LS1 shifter please leave a comment.

The Pro 5.0 and the MGW are probably the (2) most popular shifters that people have on these cars. I personally have the Hurst Billet aftermarket shifter and have had no issues with it the last 4 years I've had it installed.

I drove a buddy's/member's MGW-equipped Firehawk, and I will say, it is precise. Notchy, but precise. You will have to get used to the shorter gates and shifts.

The MGW should come with a knob...but a Momo boot wouldn't hurt.

That's odd. In GMHTP, the ads have the knob already on the shifter. I guess the company is designing new knobs.

If you want to be creative, get a Hurst ball for the MGW.

You can get the MGW with threads to use your OEM knob

I like the Pro 5.0. Notchy but accurate.
My ride is a 2002 Camaro SS SLP #3296 with 30k, LTH, 3" Y, CME, Frost tune, K&N, ported TB, Blackwing lid, Bellows, MSD, Denso Iridium, and 85mm MAF, Bilsteins, Eibach springs, SLP strut brace, Adj. Panhard, TA Girdle, UMI, Pro 5.0, Nitto NT555
My wife has a 2004 GTO with the rare SAP, 18" wheels, K&N Cold Air System, MSD, Ported TB, Frost tune, Denso Iridium, Flowmaster cat-back, 3200 Yank, 75k

Hurst billet shifter all the way. Ive had mine and driving a f-body with a stock shifter is uncomfortable to me. Side not-try to avoid adding the short stick to any aftermarket shifter. To get in reverse you basically have to hold yourself against the door to have the leverage to get it up and over in gear.

The whole shifter argument is long and everyone has their opinion. Everyone has their favorite. My best advice would be to pick one you think you might like and if you end up hating it, sell it and move on to the next one.
I've never taken my hand at a pro 5.0 or the Hurst billet but have messed with the B&M and wasn't crazy about it and ended up picking up an MGW. You will be better off with anything other than the stock shifter as there are no stops to keep you from overthrowing shifts causing internal damage to the transmission.Last edited by tatertot91; 05-20-2012 at 08:53 PM.

As far as notchy, that is indicative of the design of the shift rails internal to the T56 itself. Also coupled with the poor hydraulic system on these cars makes shifting at WOT not as smooth as other transmissions in general.
Boost gets you laid, unless your name is Jon.

I'm not going to say which one is the best.
I'll say that any one of the 3 (Pro5.0, MGW, Hurst) are a far cry better then the stock shifter.
It comes down to what you like vs price.
If at all possible I'd say if you had ppl in your area that has one of each ask them to try it. See how you like them.http://www.ls1.com/forums/f7/my-6-liter-build-174257/

Custom Swirly Black- 2001 WS6 M6
Here's the install guide, it has both the pro 5.0 and the MGW shown. http://www.ls1.com/forums/f65/how-ch...hifter-159249/
Some quick facts we all agree on;
1. Stock shifter sucks, change it.
2. The pro 5.0 is the most popular (its been out the longest).
3. MGW is the most expensive.
4. Pro 5.0 has adjustable bump stops, MGW doesn't.
5. MGW has 2 different thread sizes for the shifter knob and shaft height is adjustable.
I personally have the m g w. I chose it because I found more people have switched from the pro 5.0 to the m g w and are happier.

2001 CAMARO SS / Black- 2009 COLORADO V8/dk gray
I also just installed an MGW. I love it. Notchy? Yes! Tite? Yes! Precise? Kinda! Like most ppl say, it's so short and close that it's kinda hard to tell (by looking) what gear you're in. I'm an (ole skool) drag racer, a Muncie 4 speed with a Hurst Comp Plus...this is NOT. If you don't know what those are..I told you I'm old..LOL. The 6 speed with an MGW feels more like a "super" sports car/road racer. Mine came without a knob. I got a white Hurst 6 speed ball on it..I like it, but I might try a pistol grip. About the boot prob, try contacting (blackcar) he once told me he had a stock boot for sale. Maybe he still has it. Good luck and happy shifting...
