Refuses to pull in top gear

    Hi there,

I am having a problem with my Z28, a few months ago it went in to have a reconditioned transmission fitted (with 12 month guarantee) and has been driving fine until I noticed recently on a long run at 65mph/2000 rpm the car shift into top gear (its an A4) and refuses to pull away any more with slight movements of the throttle. If I push my foot down harder and it kicks down into third it then pull away fine.

Anyone got any thoughts? Have spoken to the company who fitted the transmission and they reckon its an engine issue but I am not convinced.

    Thanks in advance,

    Rob

As far as i knew thats what is supposed to happen, 4th isnt a pulling gear, its a cruising gear. if you were to let it drop back to third, and run the RPMs up, itll eventually go into 4th a go from there. but under about 120 mph, its gonna drop to third

yeah im pretty sure thats how autos work, and im pretty sure 4th gear is over drive to save gas not to pull hard... get a manual trans and u can run the gears any which way you want lol.

    Can.....but shouldn't.

Overdrive gears are NOT designed to handle power flowing through them.

try tapping the brake pedal to unlock the converter and see if the RPMs jump up a few hundred and then it should accelerate a little bit easier in 4th.
