Rear End or Tranny???
I am having some problems with either the transmission or the rearend. I know the rearend (stock 10 bolt) is in pretty bad shape because of the noise and the "clunking" sound it makes when it shifts. It is an aburn rearend. I hit it a little hard the other day and besides the loud "clunking" sound it makes in the rear when it shifts it felt like it was slipping. Is it possible for the rearend to slip. I don't think its my transmission because it has just been rebuilt. Anyone have any ideas on this?? Thanks

I don't think it's possible for you rear to slip. The posi might go, but then you would do a one wheel peel. Is you tranny auto or man?

I don't see how it would be impossible at all for a rear end to slip... Especially if you have been chewing up your ring and pinion, as soon as they fall under high torque load, they could easily slip if they arn't in good shape. And that rear end is notorious for going out.
Being you just had the transmission done, I would honestly, just get the rear end done because you said you know it needs it anyways, and see if that fixes it, and if it does cool, if not go back to the tranny shop.

I had my trans built 3 times within a year because things going wrong. I'm not an expert on rearends but, I think the ring gear is connected to one axle. The auburn posi is what tis the two axles together. Not an expert but from what I understand that is how it goes.
