    Random rattle under acceleration?

Hi all. What gives? Any help would be appreciated. Is it spark knock?

My '01 WS6 M6 has a peculiar rattle under acceleration that seems to happen randomly. Sometimes it is just one click upon acceleration; other times it continues rattling as the RPMs rise and then falls off as the RPMs get higher; other times, nothing. The car does not make the rattle if I give it gas at idle.

It just began doing this today. The sound is coming from the engine bay (or perhaps under it) and I cannot determine what causes it. I am annoyed that I can't faithfully reproduce the sound; I'd just take it to a dealership I trusted if I could do that.

    My modifications:
    -Magnaflow Catback
    -Hurst Billet Short Throw
    -SLP Lid
-Everything else STOCK, except the tires.

    Also:
-Full tank of 93 Octane. Has run 93 Octane since I've owned it.
-Fresh oil change. 5w30 Royal Purple. AC Delco Filter.
    -Fresh coolant flush. Dexcool 50/50
    -31500 miles on the car

Update: Click happens upon start-up.. and revving it at idle makes the rattle after I've taken my foot off the gas, and the RPMs fall back down from 2500-2000RPMs..

what the heck is going on, here?

i think i have the same thing going on. when i hit it alot of rattling is heard. i figured it wasnt serious because it in no way affects the performance. just assumed it was header heat shield or something.

Could be several things - heat shield, exhaust hitting something, cat rattling inside, loose 02 sensor, etc. I'd get it on a drive on lift and tap on everything with a rubber mallet to try and duplicate the noise - or just start it and listen to try and isolate it while it's in the air. Good luck, things like this are hard to find.

Sounds like exhuast hitting somewhere. How many miles on the car? perhaps the motor mounts are bad. that could allow the motor to shift more from the torque and cause the y pipe to bang against the car. Mine did that after I changed to LT headers and true duals. New motor mounts and no more bang. Could just be a hanger that came unfastened. Do as said before and look underneath and see what you can see.

+1 for the exhaust rattling. Check mounts and hangars.

I'm back again. This rattle is now only under heavy load in high RPMs. Sometimes it does it; sometimes it does.

The sound is somewhat like rocks in a can. I've read a bit about spark knock, but I'd be confused why my WS6 would have that. I have not pulled a plug, but the wires pass my visual inspection (no cracking or white-ash marks from heat). I even flushed my coolant just in case my temp guage was wrong! Note: I updated my modifications above.
