Is Ram Air BS?
I know that the WS6 is rated at 20 more hp than a base Trans Am. Does the freer flowing (still stock and shitty) exhaust and "amazing" ram air intake actually add 20 hp?

I voted yes, but that can't be all. The whole "Ram Air" hype is miss under stood. Yes it is freer flow and cooler air gets in but there is no large ramming effect. There may be a slight pressure change but nothing big. Its more of thow back to the early days of the Firebird and the 455 super duties. It was a way of standing out and identifing the high performance package, much like we identify the WS6 moniker with the high perforance package of later genarations.
Historicly the power has been in the tune, in the past it was the engine hardware, cam, heads, carb tunes and many carbs, now its in the computer.

Just look at the air box that sits right behind the scoops. Its solid plastic, or whatever it's made out of. Air isn't really going ot pass though there into the engine. Air is brought up from under the car, just like all the other ones. The 'Ram Air' hood is just for looks.
Now there are ways to make a 'WS7'. A WS7 is a small conversion where the air box is opened up and modified to take in air directly from the scoops on the hood.

BUT would aerodynamics outweigh or equal that small boost in horsepower??? the ram air hood is obviously less aerodynamic than a camaro or TA hood

Listen guys...lets simplify for effect here.
Your motor is a great big vacuum pump. Sucking air in as the pistons go down stroke and blowing air out as they go up. Now your humming along at 2200 rpm going down the highway...your engine is sucking air at a much greater volume than any passive airflow could ever provide. In other words.....your motor is sucking in 600CFM of air from wherever you have placed your air intake/filter setup. To get a "Ram-Air" to push 600CFM of air into your motor would require you to have a velocity of somewhere around 155mph.
So if a fella has a KN CAI setup mounted over to the drivers side down behind the headlight sucking air into the intake at 600CFM......and a WS6 Ram Air is sucking 600CFM through its nostrils...your both sucking 600CFM of air into your motor regardless of where that air is coming from.
The real consideration is to get colder denser air into your intake versus heated engine bay air being sucked into your intake....so moving your intake away or out of the engine bay area is what you are after.

414 RWHP 395 RWTQ- 00 Black Ram Air Trans Am
I think GM calling it "Ram Air" is the tricky part in this whole thing. I have my hood debaffled and sealed directly to my dual cone Volant CAI. Each nostril feeds a cone. I personally don't look at it as "Ram Air' though, I look at it as a functional CAI that provides the coolest freshest air possible to the car, nothing from the engine bay gets in. Ram Air just gets guys all pumped up
