Question About SS Prices
Hey Guys(and gals)
I am looking at a 2001 SS loaded with 15k miles on it. They are asking $14500 for the car and it really does look new. Not a scratch on the car and low miles. They never used the SS carpet mats and the SLP Fobs. The bank says its 2K too much but I know these cars are worth at least that. Do any of you have some factual information on this. I want to be fair to the dealer but I do not want to pay too much for the car either. Thanks
Ed

I paid 12.9k for mine. It was very clean, but had just under 70k on it.
Not sure what the market has done to the values, but I'd say it's a good deal with the low mileage.
Get an unsecured loan and just buy it out right. But, see if you can get them to come down anyway. Take in a letter from your financing company as leverage. I'm sure they want to sell any cars they have on the lot!
Good luck

Will I have been looking for 2 months and I have let some good deals get by. On the one hand I think the cars are worth the asking price, on the other I want a bit of equity in any used car I purchase, especially a 7 year old soon to be 8 year old car.

Well, equity in a used car just isn't gonna happen unless you've got yourself a bass ass classic.
Used cars only depreciate. Unless of course you modify it. And then, only someone who wants those mods will pay a little extra to have them.
So, if you like the car. It's as clean as you say with that low, low mileage... I'd see if I could do some negotiating on price.

Thats not a bad deal w/ those miles. however, i think you could get one for 1 or 2k cheaper if you wait and look around some more. these cars dropped in value about 3-4k in the last year (i bought at the wrong time late last year).

As an ex car salesman, I will say that every dealership I worked for tacked at least 5k onto the price we paid for any car we took in on trade & put on our lot.
That's why I tried to always sell the used vehicles rather than new.....they are the only ones that made me money.
Value is in the eye of the buyer, but if the bank says it's 2k too much.....I'd believe them.
Dealer's pencils get sharper at the end of the month, so you may get a better deal later on.

If U like it?
It is a pretty good buy... never count on making Ur cash back!
If want it to keep? Buy it, yet offer 2k less!

Its worth what someone will pay for it. Not a bad price at all.
As far as the banks concerned they only look at the book value, they dont want to lend you more than what they know they can get if you default on the loan. They have to protect themselves.
To purchase you would have to come up with 2 grand out of your pocket or talk down the seller a bit.
J2001 SS, Its not the car its the Driver that matters....

Actually I have a 100% loan so thats not the problem. THe credit union asked me why I was paying 2K more than retail value for the car is the main reason I got worried. I asked the guy to drop it to 13500 and if he accepts up to 14K I am going to take the deal. The dealer was asking 16500 for it and they have a dealership fee of 689 on top of that. So we will see what happens. I have the loan and its burning a hole in my pocket. LOL

Nice price for those miles no doubt! If you like it, buy it up. Its not a BAD deal by no means. Buying a car is never to be looked upon as an investment.

It all depends. Is it THE car you want? Does it have EVERYTHING you want it to have? I paid $15k for mine when I found others way way cheaper. But it has exactly what I wanted it to have. What I mean is, dont buy it if you truly want a 6-speed or other things etc, etc.

One thing to add..... Also take into consideration what mods/plans you have for the car. If you want to do a motor build/swap and go all out on it, maybe find one with higher miles for cheaper and sink some of that money you save into the build. Dont worry about the deals you let go or passed up, you will find the car you want when you're supposed to. Or like in my case, the car found me.

Sorry guys. I am a trueist when it comes to cars. If they already look good and perform well I leave them alone. I am in the middle of restoring a mustang at present and the only upgrades its getting is the ones to make it better. No improvements that will take away from the feel of the car. I like Camaro SS because they put everything into the mixer and shook instead.

I am working in Chile until Saturday next week. When I get home I am going to fly to Florida and pick the car up and drive it home. It will probably be the most miles the car has ever had on it in one month let alone one year. I will for sure post pics of it. Maybe even have my hot wife pose with it. Shhhhh! do not tell her I will be posting pics of her. LOL
