    Automatic Choke sticking?

does it rev up then stall?
    or sputter then stall?

Is it a fairly new carb?
Has it been sitting for a long time?

try adjusting your fuel mixture screws

If its been sitting for a long time you may need to tear it apart and clean it all out.

Try adjusting your idle up a bit and see if it idles smoothly if not then check your mixture screws.

It could be a number of things though, bad plugs or wires, distributor, fuel filter.....

When you go wot all four should open, when idle or just cruising usually just two are open when you "hit the throttle" the secondary's should open up thus having all four open.

I believe you can adjust the setting on when the secondary's open but im not positive.

Our olds cutlass did something very similar could have been the same thing, and it was the automatic choke that was stuck on because of dirt and grime build up.

Sounds like the choke to me too. Carbed motors usually don't start like the fuel injected ones that people are used to these days. Most of the carbed motors I had usually needed to babied for a minute before they stayed running. Then again most didn't even have a choke hooked up that I had or they were manual chokes.
