think of it this way, if i have a block of wood that is small 1' x 1' x 1',
there is a limit to the size of a hole that I can safely cut into it, say 11" by
11" deep. If I have a big block of wood, 2' x 2' x 2', then I can safely cut a
bigger hole 23" by 23" deep. In an engine, the displacement is determined by
bore (size of hole) and stroke (depth of hole). If I use the wood blocks above
as an example, I can cut the same size hole into each, have the same displacement, but the strength and reliability will be different.

another thing is the bore spacing of the cylinders. more spacing allows for larger pistons.

Another dead giveaway on the Rat (big block chevy) vs Mouse (small block chevy) is the valvecovers. SBC's have 4 bolts per valve cover (except late model center bolt ) and are usualy rectangular where BBC's have 7 bolts per side and have more rounded edges. Heck nowadays it's possible to get a 454 SBC and a 454 BBC!
Fords and mopar I don't know the differences as well as they have more than just 2 styles of big blocks and small blocks ranging in cubic inch displacements as well.

Displacement is not a good way to judge small vs big-block. Heck, even the LSx series SB can go out to 480+ cubic inches with the new WarHawk blocks. For GM the easiest way is to look at the valve-covers as mentioned above. If the valve-covers are off, the "porcupine" or "staggered" springs of the BB head should be a dead giveaway.

Darton sleeved blocks also have the big cubic inch capacity. Dont know what they cost in relation to an LSx though.
