    Pros and cons?

Hey everybody. I have a couple questions about performance airfilters.

    1. What are the pros and cons of a K&N air filter?
    2. Does it really make a difference?
    3. Does it add any horsepower?
    4. Does it work better with an air lid?
    5. How often do you have to re-oil it?

I have searched this forum and couldn't find these answers.

    Please help,

    Thank you!

    2. No real difference
    3. NO!
    4. Not really
    5. The type of conditions you drive in dictate the frequency of oiling. You want to be very cautious of over oiling though.

This has been debated for a while and it's tough to get concrete data on this one. If I recall correctly, Vengeance had several dyno runs where the only change was installing the K&N filter and the HP and TQ numbers went down. That being said, many have claims that once the filter has been used for a bit, that it will exhibit gains over the stock paper filter.

Ok. So why do people buy them? I was under the impression that the K&N air filter created more air flow, therefore increasing performance.

On certain cars/trucks with certain airboxes it may be a benefit, just never proven on the LS1 camaro/firebird set-up. And the destroying the maf is not worth it IMO.

Mine had a K&N filter in it when I bought it, along with exhaust. So I can't vouch for a difference on my LS1 car for paper vs k&n, but I can tell you when I switched to my Volant I could tell a difference over the k&n + factory air box.

Read some of the oil threads also, oil contamination has alot to do with air filter performance and the k/n has not filtered very well and that causes engine wear. I removed mine for a napa gold.

Where can you find these other airfilters? I have never heard of them.

Custom CAI is only good on a modified motor with more CFM requirments. Other than that it is a waste.

as long as you don't post direct links to their site you're fine.

I've ran a K&N on my car for ~8-9 years. Haven't had any problems with it. Did I notice a big gain when I put it in? Nope. I have the bottom of the box cutout so my filter gets cleaned probably 2 times a season. I'm sure it's letting a little more dirt in but if you look at the design of the oil filters I really don't see any way they could flow worse than a paper filter. I would think a paper filter is considerably more restrictive. I have no proof to back that up, that's just personal opinion.
I clean mine often, don't over oil it, and change my oil well before it needs it really. My MAF gets cleaned each season too. In 8-9 years I haven't had any problems with my system so I have no plans to switch filters anytime soon.
