possible engine tick???
Hey guys I am looking into a 01 SS 6 speed car with 63k miles. im in Iowa and the car is in Chicago so I had a friend go look at and tell me what he thought. he said the car was pretty clean except for the paint on the rear pillars behind the door glass looked like it had been repainted and there was a tick coming from the engine that didnt go away while it idled for about 5min. but he did say the noise didnt seem to change if the rpms were increased.
really loud purge valve? i dont really want to drive 7hrs round trip to hear a noise. my buddie is a technican and so was his buddy he brought along and they both wernt sure about this noise but they said they thought it was definatly coming from the engine..
but an engine knock or lifter tick should change with rpm?? I cant find one locally so i could try and compare engine nosie to see if its normal or not.
PLEASE HELP I was planning on going to get it this weekend.
but now I dunno...

All Ls1's tick, our engines are built "loosly" a good full synthetic will quiet it down alot.
Since our blocks are aluminum after they reach temp everything seals nicely and the tick usualy quiets down a bit.
J2001 SS, Its not the car its the Driver that matters....

guys i found this post after doing a search what do they mean by a sewing machine?????
Thanks for the help guys, I started mine up the next morning expecting to hear that nasty sound again. To my surprise it was all gone and I've got a sewing machine with good oil press. I am bone stock gasket and head wise and 7.4 is what thunder racing recommended and it seems to sound fine on my 243/249 .613/.618 110 lsa.

I don't know as I would call it a sewing machine noise -- we definitely have piston slap and a little valve train noise when cold. My friend was helping me with a coolant change this spring and when we started the car up he suddenly had a concerned look on his face. I thought that was pretty funny since I was used to it and had read all about it on this site. As long as the noise fades away as the engine warms up I would not be too concerned.
