Passing state inspection
Bought the 01 T/A WS6 a few weeks ago. I went to get a sticker today and the mechanic told me the battery must have been disconnected recently as it was reading that the OBD was not ready to be read, I disconnected it last Saturday to install a new headlight motor. He gave me a rejection sticker and said to drive it a few days, come back and it should be all set.
How long does it take to "be ready"? It is not a daily driver. Will I know when it is ready by running the OBD code scanner?Last edited by rkh3; 05-08-2010 at 11:08 AM.

Yeah, put some miles on it from a cold start. This should help too, don't have to follow it exactly:

I had the same thing happen to me with my older 96. I drove it between 50-100 miles and took it back again and it was good to go. Good luck.

Put 150 miles on it and catalyst monitor and secondary air system monitor are still "not ready". I ran it through the readiness prep tests but not in order. Is it important that they be run in order?
I just read it could take 200 miles of mixed driving, I have 60 days to pass & have a OBDII scanner which reads readiness. I'll just keep scanning it till it is ready.

The way I understand it, it's not so much "miles" but "cycles." 5 cycles could be required after the battery was disconnected, resetting all the readiness tests. Each cycle has to be from a cold start. Hang in there. Never had to go through it myself, no emissions here in Florida.

My problem is that it is not a daily driver, have a company car, so it is difficult to put a lot of miles on it.. Maybe I will take the t/a a couple days next week to work.

So, like I said, the car is not a daily driver so I have put 250 miles on it since I failed inspection two weeks ago. Side roads, hwy, a few cold starts, etc and it still reads that the cat and secondary air monitors are not ready, using a code reader rather than pay the inspection station to keep checking it.
Is it simply a case of, don't worry about it, they will eventually get a reading and come to life, or are there cases when they don't????
I had 60 days to get it to pass, down to 46.Last edited by rkh3; 05-25-2010 at 05:10 PM.

If you put miles on the car, and you take it back to the inspector, and their machine doesn't read your OBD system, it might be their machine. At my last job, the machine wouldn't read a brand new car. So the boss had to call a state inspector to recalibrate/repair the machine. The OBD in your car should be fine by now.

Still aren't ready, eh? Any mods to the car?

Only the exhaust, that I know of.
I have read that it could take 40+ cold starts, any truth?
Thinking the worst, how much to replace the OBD computer?
Could a tuner get around this?Last edited by rkh3; 05-25-2010 at 06:08 PM.

I am wondering if the car had headers prior to you owning it and the previous owner had the secondary O2s tuned out and maybe that is the reason you are having scanner issues. When you go for your inspections, do you go to the same shop every year(s)?

I'm wondering the same thing. Someone with HPTuners needs to go in there and check to see if this thing has been monkey'd with

When I test drove the car prior to buying it the SES light was on and it read cat/o2 sensors. When I picked up the car the light was off and didn't come back on. I know the kid who owned it didn't touch it in between the test drive and pick up, why would he, the time to do that would be before you showed the car to kill the light.
The two sensors that are "not ready" are cat & secondary air. As I said, the cat was working a month ago.
I want to bring it to a tuner anyways but if anyone knows of anything to get either of these sensors to kick on, let me know.

The vehicle has to go through both miles, and ignition cycles before the computer resets.

So far many cycles and 325 miles and still the secondary air and cat monitors have not come to life.
