    Question Noise at idle...

I purchased my SS about a month and a half ago, and it only has about 21500 miles on it to date. It is garage kept, and although taken up a few times has NOT by any means been ragged on a regular basis. With that said...

I walked out of the house to my idling car yesterday (something I usually don't do, and heard what appears to be a very faint "clack" on the passenger side. Not audible on driver side, barely audible in front, but stick your head under the passenger side front fender well (thank god for the "pulled engine" wheel gap on these cars) and it's definitely there. Oil recently changed, have always run decent fuel in it....is this a normal sound for these cars?

Don't notice while driving, and have never heard this before...

I have heard/diagnosed rod knock and lifter "tick" before...but this doesn't sound like either one. Surely on a car with THIS kind of mileage it isn't a rod knocking...Anyone had this issue before?

Thanks for the input LS1.com, I appreciate it.

P-I-S-T-O-N S-L-A-P Had the same thoughts when we first bought our car. It is noisy when cold, but sounds just fine after the engine has some heat in it. Does your noise go away after it's warmed up?

    Exhaust leak?
What kind of oil/filter did you change with?
How long was the old oil in there?
    Any additives?
Does it (the noise) change with the engine temps?

You should hear mine when it's 30 degrees out pretty sure sounds like every rod is about to exploded but a little heat and expansion clears right up

could be piston slap but that should go away once the car warms up. LSx motors are noisy but I would probably go down Sarge's list if it's doing it warm.

    No exhaust leak
Changing oil this weekend and then I'll update. The oil is still the oil that was in it when I purchased it and I haven't added anything to it (level is fine).

Will check it again to see if it does it when cold, then when warm today on the way home from work.

    Thanks for the help guys

Also make sure you are using the correct weight of oil. 5w-30 is the factory recommendation.

My understanding is that LS1 pistons have short skirts and are clearanced such that on cold startup you can hear the piston "slap" against the bore. As the engine warms up and things begin to expand the noise fades away. It's not an uncommon thing and based upon the miles these engines are racking up it is apparently not detrimental.

mine goes away in 1 block down the street. just wondering though, has anybody tried selling a car with the piston slap and had people walk away cuz they were convinced something was wrong?

mine is a 99 ws6 with 114,000 miles and i have never heard mine do that. so, i don't know why it does that, maybe the oil pump is going bad or gunked up with sludge, does the oil look clean?

Could be the release bearing. Mine makes a small tick every so often when sitting at idle. See if the tick stops when you push in and release the clutch, if so thats your culprit. doesn't hurt anything.
