Considering you know vehicles, hopefully you have checked your oil lately and made sure it's the right level! I could also be old oil, when was the last time it was changed! I'm thinking you have low/old oil or a very dirty oil filter. If all of that checks out fine then I wouldn't be worried about it, hell it could maybe an bad factory oil gauge!!

Does your oil pressure light come on when you turn on the car or when your getting into it!? I mean there are just so many thing that can happen like worn main bearings, worn rod bearings, oil pump failure, oil pump screen clogged. Just so many things! Unfortunately, if the oil pressure gauge is showing low oil pressure and/or even lower oil pressure after the engine warms up or the light starts flickering when the engine warms up... when that happens you probably DO have an oil pressure problem. When babbit bearings start to wear out the gap between the bearing and the crankshaft increases and the oil leaks out too quickly for the pump to be able to maintain oil pressure. When that happens, the ONLY option is to rebuild or replace the engine.

But if it's a faulty oil sending unit it could cause the oil pressure light to come on steady or it might cause the oil pressure light to not come on at all, even when the engine is not running. Also the sending unit could make you oil gauge show no oil pressure or really high pressure!

It is possibly the drain back holes in the engine and they are partially plugged up. Once it pumps all the oil up into the engine, and it doesn't drain back quick enough, the pump has none or little to pump, so the pressure will drop off. When an engine gets sludged up, this is what happens.

The best thing to do is install a shop gauge into the oil pressure sensor plug/hole and find out if the motor has oil pressure problems or if it's electrical problems.

Does this happen in 3rd and 4th gears?

Fill to 6 quarts instead of 5.5 next time and report back.

It is behind the intake on the driver side of the motor.

a buddy a mine had exact same problem and his oil pickup fell off his pickup tube. i suggest runnin a mechanical gauge to see what's really goin on...and not drivin it till ya do. if yer mech gauge says the same thing ya need to start tearin into that thing.
