oil help with a bike plz help

my friend has a 2006 honda shadow, that he is trying to sell me, it has 2000 miles on it and still has original oil in it, he said that if i buy it he will change the oil and that he is going to use castrol 10w40. my question is can you use car oil in a motorcycle and not mess it up?

Why not call or stop by the local honda dealer & ask the service dept. what the recommended oil is??

If it has a wet clutch you need to be careful with your oil choices......stick with what Honda recommends....

ha ha sarge is just the man i was hopeing would chime in, ok mabey you can make sense of this, this is straight from the owners manual.

API Classification: SG or higher except oils labled as energy conserving.
Weight: 10w40
JASO T 903 standard: MA

Go for it....I'd use a good SM rated oil and have myself a blast....Castrol is good....

so then i can just go to wally world or the local parts store and get a few quarts of 10 40 castrol and be ok? i also found a few pages later where is says not to go above sh
