    Noises

Good morning everyone. I have an 02 Formula with 88000 miles on it. I bought it used with 86000 miles. The previous owner did regular maintenance. The engine has the usual LS1 noises, piston slap and lifter noises when cold. Has anyone eliminated or minimzed these noises by changing to a different motor oil? I am using PP 10w 30W since switching to it the noises seem worse. Any suggestions??

I run GC 0w30. changed over a while back from mobil 1 5w30. seems quieter, but then again my motor has always been fairly quiet compared to other ls1's I've heard.

really? the autozone in my town keeps the shelf's stocked. I've heard good things about the 0w30 amsoil as well... but that may be harder to find then the GC.

The thicker oil well not circulate as well as lighter oil, hence why LS1s are recommended for 5w-30 oil in your owners manual. The thinner oil sprays/flows better and coats the lifters better which reduces the noise.

after checking compsyn's first link im thinking i found out what will get rid of the cold engine piston slap. can this be true? my first oil change as soon as i got this car home was with 10/30 dino oil. i figured after 100k a bump up from 5/30 couldnt hurt. our oil dealer rep that calls on my work told me to stick with 5/30 and to try the new castrol edge telling me all the great stuff about it. put in 5/30 edge and it may be great oil [havent heard anything about it on here] nothing changed in the noise dept. is there anything on this oil yet?

You need Sarge on this one. He's the man to ask on oils. Look in "oil junkie" thread. I hear that the "slap" comes from the piston skirts being too short. I dunno just what I've heard. But ya ask Sarge on the oil thing though.

nothing wrong with the piston, its a slight over-bore on 1 or more cylinders which allows the piston to "rattle" in the cylinder. usually[as in my case] after you get a little heat in the engine it goes away. mine gets quiet till i get to the end of the street, or just sit a couple of minutes for a warm up.

Changed the oil, same noise. I will run it for a while and see what it does. After 3 or 4 mins the noise stops. The car hauls u know what!! No I retired from a South Fla agency.
