Noise from under TA

Suddenly I'm getting a noise from under the car that sounds like as if it has snow tires. You can hear it best at 20mph. Here is what i tried so far but the noise is still present:
* While driving i put the car in neutral.
* Turn the ignition off while driving.
* Drove on grass (tire noise).
* Checked fluid in rear.
I took a video under the car with it jacked up while i spin the tire (both sides sound the same). Like i said it sounds like snow tires.

It's kinda hard to tell from the video but check the wheel bearings.

Have you had brake work done recently? Sounds like your backing plate is rubbing against the brake rotor. Also, have you noticed any leaks in the rearend(pinion seal, axle seal)? Do you feel any vibrations while driving?

Haha i thought that also but i'll assume if that was the problem he'd notice it.

What's the mileage on the car?

I had both axles replaced in May of 07 and axle bearings in April of 09. I changed the rear pads about 1 year ago. No leaks or vibration. I just hear that low tone sound like snow tires. I don't hear that high pitch scraping sound that's in the video while driving. Has 57k miles.

OK. From your "snow tire" description, I would say the noise is a "whirring" sound, which usually means bearings.

New bearings, a rag, and bearing grease. The hardest part is taking the tire off.

You will need to jack up the rear, drain the gear oil, remove the rear wheels, rotors, calipers and remove the c-clips in the pumpkin to be able to slide the rear axles out. I may be missing steps, but other members will chime in to help you out. If necessary, PM moderator Cutlass.

Isn't there a pin to pop out? Usually held in by a bolt, then you push the shaft inwards and you can get to the c clamps then and pull the shaft right out?

I think you're right. Like I posted, there are steps I have missed.

I'm not sure either. But makes sense, c clamps hold them from coming out and something needs to keep them from going in.

Yes there is a pin that holds the c clamps in...

Does the sound actually come from the wheel areas.. or could it be coming from the pumpkin itself? When you pop the cover... look for chewed gears/metal shavings on the magnet.

Yep thats pretty good. Hardest part of a rear bearing repair is slide hammering out the old ones (most people don't have that tool) and pounding in the new bearing (most people don't have the proper driver/installer).
Also, if the rear wheel bearing is bad, there's a chance you'll have a messed up axle shaft and you'd have to replace that also.

Thanks for the info everyone. Since this is my daily driver and i'm off from work tomorrow i will bring it to the dealer. I can't tackle this one. Warranty expired last year so its time to pay I'll post back tomorrow..

If they recommend an axle shaft replacement and you don't like the price of a new one, you can ask them to locate a used axle from a salvage yard if possible.

My rear end used to make this grinding noise. I had bad axle shaft. I put a new bearing in and it stopped the vibration but the noise was still there. After a while the bearing went bad again and I decided to use a repair bearing until I can find a good used axle. I replaced the other side bearing and inspected the axle. It was fine. This is how my bad axle looks like. I put the repair bearing and my rear end is quiet. Don't forget to put new gear oil and LSD additive in it.



I used the bearings and seals from timken. Good so far.

if you have a 4 ch you will need to remove the sensors out of the backing plates to allow you to push the axles in far enough to release the c-clips.

Went to the dealer today and was told the carrier bearings and pinion bearing are bad. They are covering it under warranty because its been less than 10k miles since they last worked on it. I guess i got lucky on this one just hope they install it right..
