new motor or just cam and lifters?

long story short lifter went out and chewed up my cam am I okay to just replace these items or do I need to worry about metal shavings in the motor?

How bad are we taking (metal shavings)?

Are you able to do the work yourself?

If you got the cash, new is almost always better, but it comes down to how much you want to spend?

On a budget - well there is no easy answer. You have several variables to consider.

Big metal shavings - a complete rebuild is best because you need to make damn sure that one of those savings doesn't clog an oil channel or find it's way to the crank bearings.

Mild metal shavings it's a gamble. I say this because if a big enough piece got caught between the cam and the bearings you might have block issues.

Also it's not just a cam you have to consider. Oil pump, timing chain, etc...anything that oil goes through has the potential of having metal shavings caught in it.

All the needle bearings fell out and it broke off one side of the lifter I got some of the shavings out of the oil. I don't want to spend a lot on it for a rebuild but I feel like I have no choice.
