Is my rear diff. going?????

Hey everyone

I have a 99 TA and last night I took of from a buddies house and the car was backed up as if I was going to back sideways and slam in in drive and jam it but I just stop looked at him and tramped it it spun like crazy then I realised 1 burn mark not 2!!!!! Never did that before and I tried again today If I'm turning 1 wheel spinning only.

Is that my clutches, locker or a whole rebuilt and where do I go to find out????

There are debates on whether the 4th gens use differential additive. Change your differential fluid and get some additive. There are synthetic gear oils out there with the diff additive(friction modifier) already added. Keep us posted.

If you are still "one-wheeling" the car, then most likely the clutches in the diff are on their way out.

You have a 99 which from what i remember is a torsen carrier. Friction modifier is not used with torsen carriers because they use spider gears unlike auburn diffs that use clutches. I would get it looked at but it sounds like you'll be needing a new carrier.

When did they switch from the torsen diffs? I have an 01 but didn't look that close at my diff when I changed the gear oil back in Nov.

I have a 99' Z28 Convertible and it requires the additive. I assume yours does as well.

My car requires the additive and I did an oild change with additive about 3000 miles ago probably should of left it alone It hooks up both wheels when leaving the trap though lol

It more than likely was just either the pavement or the way the car was sitting. If you were rolling Not perfectly straight it could have been slipping thinking you were beginning a turn. Hell for that matter check your psi in the tires. If there is Big variance than the circumference in different from side to side currently too.

After checking to make sure psi is even go to a empty parking lot and hit a couple small hole shots and see if it is still a 1 legger. If it isn't DON'T SWEAT IT!!

My car was spining from only 1 tire.
I change the oil on the differential and after dat it was spinning eith 2 tires
I used Lucas/oil with posi trac aditive
you should try that
mine was 98 z28

I think I was being paranoid It works fine I tried it from a dig and it hooks up great. I've owned the car for, well this is the 3rd summer and it never happened to me before so I figured I could give my wife and excuse to change gears No just kidding lol
